Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

Finally.... I like this build alot its nice neat and clean. But...You NEED some motor work. You said you need the most reliable motor possible. You also said you have very rough riding conditions. Steep hill climbs etc. You need some power and reliability so 50/50. Im thinkin a +3 with port work seems to be a very common set up for power and reliable. Stay away from a bigbore tho. Im gettin +3 with port work prob 2 weeks from now. so ill keep you posted on how reliable it is if you already havent decided or not

my +3 stroker motor has been very reliable, (knock on wood) it has never left me stranded or even really ran bad aside from a broken reed once lol. maintenance is the key, do a complete job the first time, seals, bearings, whatnot and it will treat you well :D

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

Ok, work has killed my time but it is almost done.

@1995 - Yes, I will be building my second motor to eventually drop into this, as explained I was in the unique position of having two motors but want to ride so prepped the motor in the quad now for this summer (and a backup) and will have a ported build coming. I will open another partial build thread for this when I do it after summer. I haven't decided whether I am going with a +3 crank or a trued stock crank, which I know have two of an 03 and an 06 as there was a wiseco put into the motor in my quad now. I can tell you with certainty that I will not be running a BBK I did a lot of research and just don't trust that parts will be available in future yrs to come.

Sorry guys I'm not the quickest but it will be done soon, I was basically waiting to finish my exhaust which got done yesterday, and my swingarm which I just got back and back on last night, it'll be firing up this weekend and then just finishing details (decals etc.) so real close.......I:I

Pikled it looks sick. Can't wait to see the final results. It'll be mean!

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

Ok, I can't believe I've let this slip so far back so I guess this is a bump//update.

First, I've been working overtime lately at the business so havn't picked up a tool in atleast a week.

So, I left off with ceramic coating my exhaust...........it was done and sat for a bit until we went to cure it........then I found out the hard way that you cannot ceramic coat a chrome exhaust. curing it caused the ceramic coat to peel off in chunks......arrgghh....luckily it did not hurt my pipe except for it now has a slight gold tinge to the chrome.........this has prompted me to think about upgrading to a right bend.
I'm still going to keep this exhaust but the chrome finish is not working for this build so.......I'm on the hunt...lol. Other than that. I'm finishing up the decaling on fenders then hopefully if I get some time off later in the week this quad will finally be fired up. No worries now though, I just got a new project to start on shortly but my wife only will allow me one at-a-time so the blaster's gotta get finished....

@kronick....thx for the encouragement.

No problem!
What if you would sand the hell out of the chrome first and then ceramic it or use high temperature paint?

Haha yea I learned the hard way, I actually had prepped it real well using steel wool and pre-paint to clean the surface immaculately. I put it on though last night and am just gonna roll with it for the time being. I'm looking into finding a new one though and buying it bare then ceramic coating it back to flat-black just a lot of decisions on pipes now.

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

I see, I wish I was closer because I'd bead blast it for you for practically free( need a beer, haha). Just got a new compressor and can't stop playing with it... I'm gonna bead blast the house if I can get some free media.

Wish we could find a pipe in the works finish. I think that's what it's called. I'll explain when the pipe is raw from it's manufactured state. Except I'd put some high temp clear powder on it. That would look RAW on that bike, lol.

Keep up the work, and don't do like me and rush to finish so you can get to the next project. Looking forward to the updates!

Not rushing just getting close......I have to update with pics bad.....the DMC will still work with this engine (didn't wreck it or anything, just learned something the hard way). I'm kinda looking for a pipe for my ported motor build which will be one of my next projects. Trust me after the work I've put in I'm not rushing anything ......

Doing some research though, and I think I'm gonna pick up a dyno port bare exhaust. I don't think it'll be the best for this motor but should work well with my ported motor build.

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

So as explained the holes were off on my CFM as usual, I already plugged and covered them.

Then drilled bolt hole in rear exhaust side gasket.
Cut aluminium spacer (the CFM one was to thick to squeeze between frame rail and bolt through gusset)
Drilled matching mount hole in air-box then mounted this side

120t28p.jpg

With the other side completely secure, I was able to re-drill the hole on this side to mount where intended

2043rt.jpg

It now sits as straight as I could get it with the rear lip of the airbox just a hair lower than the rear sub-frame cross-bar and even between frame rails. I also still have plenty of clearance (1 inch when compressed) between bottom front of box and rear shock It is also rock solid with both sides torqued tight and so I think at this point I won't mess with the wrapped mount I was making.

oirtop.jpg

Better angle of how box sits - man, I have to admit even though I said I'd never sell that billet oil pump cover or polish it I might just clean it up for now and brush the shock, cover, and manifold at a later date

21jdf1z.jpg

Take some sand paper to the side of that cover my grandpas bike has the same cover but he took sand paper to the side of it and so did I it looks way better than all. That black clogging up it is silver but the yamaha is black trust me it's slick I will post a pic of what my grandpas looks like

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

So Sorry guys I have been an inattentive member due to an extended family emergency that has consumed my time for the last five weeks......

The good news. The blaster is done....I:I....and running!!!!!!!

I have successfully ran it through the first break-in idle periods and after pulling the plug am now going to be fine tuning the jetting this weekend.

I have a numerous amount of pictures to post and will be doing so soon. most likely over the next week after working out any tuning issues.

So once again sorry to those who have followed this build but you will not be disappointed as I reveal the final product over the next week........

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

good to see you back bro, hope all is well with the family !!!!!!

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

Man .... First, the last of the summer I had to forget about the blaster for awhile as I dealt with a death in the family. Thank you for the kind words Awk. I've become a hit and miss member lately, and I never updated pics ... but I'm some what glad about the pics which I will explain

So as stated I did get the blaster running, once again thank you Awk for the CPW suggestion, It took a jet needle and needle jet to get the carb tuned properly. One reason I chose the carb setup I did was that I am able to switch it out with the stock carb which allowed me to ride while I properly got my new carb tuned. Sad thing is, I am now going to sell the carb (after I took a month tuning it, as I am going to finally take everyones suggestion and will be doing a port job on my motor in the next few months). I gave up on building another motor and long story short I ended up trading my spare motor for a new project.

Back to the pics though, I feel as if I pulled a 442 and left ya all hanging ... not the case though. Although my time in the shop has been hit and miss lately, I have had some time to ride. From the descriptions, I believe my riding area is similiar to Awk mountain in that it eats quads for lunch ... Right now I have realized my initial build flaws and just yesterday started re-thinking and fabricating a few pieces that looked excellent but did not hold up to the trail abuse my riding area hands out.

So, It will honestly take a few days to fix the problems I encountered, but I will finally be ready to post updated finish pics at the latest, a week from this Friday. I also am planning on becoming a more regular forum member again. So sorry to all who have followed this build I could have been posting as I have stopped by a few times for advice but no sh*t this time pics and my finished quad are coming. I:I

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

Been a few days bro i need some pics.

ALso if you havent got a pipe that you wanna stick with i hear dyno port is great and they come in a raw finish so you can coat it your self, if it is anything like my lrd id get it any second i just have a basicly stock motor and wow did it make a difference

Been on, just not in my thread ...charging camera now and running to go get some screws for the new part I made this morn ... don't wanna share quite yet.

And for sure, I've decided on a dynoport and am not changing my mind I will be getting a raw finish one so it can be ceramic coated black but this will not happen for a few months as it is not a good pipe without porting which I finally decided will be getting done on my blaster motor. First things first though I'm fixing a few things and then gonna ride for a few like is then I will be doing a ported motor and new pipe over winter.

Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

I guess better late than never ...

Well, so here we go ... I have some more pictures to take and post but here is a start. I have two things left to do. 1. Reinstall my skidplate. 2. I have a few small decals left to put on (I was waiting until I was completely done.
So as stated, after riding through the breakin and tuning I had noticed a few areas that could use improvement. Mainly, was the fact that the fender guards I had made followed the original fender mounts and angle and truthfully they stuck out forward from my heel guards. This posed two problems, the first was the angles did not match up (ran forward of the heel guard), the second was it gave little room for kicking and my legs were also rubbing against them constantly. If I was to move my fenders back it would be strictly for the reason of opening up the leg area. I did not do this however. Instead I cut the fender mount off (the mount welded to frame), cut my fenders straight across where the hole was on the left (which was the whole reason for messing with my fenders in the first place, slightly shaved my fender sides (towards the bottom) then rebuilt matching fender guards out of .190 Aluminium. I chose to brush the aluminium and remove the stock fender mounts as the new guards do a better job of mounting the fender stiff. They also cut the fender straight down (same effect as moving fender back) as you will see in the pics so they match the heel guards and also give about two inches of extra room where the normal fender would typically hang over the heel guard.

So yea pics -

Side Angle so you can see how the fender drops off straight, you can also see how I used a small (1/4inch) nylon spacer between the fender and mount, there was a few resosns for doing this (mainly having to do with the bend in the fender that still remained in the previous hole side) Shown in second pic here.

vf8jsz.jpg

The mount is all one piece utilizing the bracket and mount already made for the heel guards, I took a good amount of time to make everything match up perfectly (as you can see) Plus, as stated, no stock fender mounts as the guards mount the fender super stiff

14v01ky.jpg

I removed both fender mounts as these now do a better job, since the Heel/Fender Guard brackets rest against the mounts, I left roughly a 1/2 inch on the welded mount side when cutting it off and finished it with a rubber cap (shown here)
