Re: Finally Ready For Dream Build ... Need Engine Suggestions

Well, I have a plan. Not going with a stroker, but a mild trail port/head mod, Mikuni TM34, and Dynoport Pipe are planned for this winter. Probably December, there will be to much snow to ride here then anyway. Just wanted to get some riding in now.

I will say with the extremely improved throttle response and the torque I get from the gearing, for riding my regular trails it is set-up good, i'm never out of fourth/fifth anyway. My regular trail I ride is about 60 inches wide, rocky as hell (hence the tires) and climbs about 1200 ft elevation (so hilly). Anyway this is why I'n not going overboard on the motor, though the upgrade will be to kind of just fully round it out.

Also, They will be listed but if anyone wants to call dibs on my TM28, or DMC, the carb which was new (just scroll back a couple pages) will be 85$ and the DMC full system $150

And Thx Kronick for finally editing my Thread name

Can't wait to see the results after winter! I:I
No problem for editing title.

Why not a stroker? A stroker is great for a trail quad. More torque.

Well, truthfully, more to go wrong ... and torque isn't my issue. I actually will admit I don't even know if my plan will fix my main issue which is my gears are so short. I got plenty of torque through the gearing but first couple gears are worthless. I'll get it figured out though. plus I just put in a new crank anyway. Maybe way down the line next time I have to rebuild the bottom end I'll look more into it but stickin with the above plan for this winter.

So trail rode the sh*t out of it this morn, no more holdin back ... Needless to say I will be replacing my third swingarm skid, Mine took two big hits today one hit split it at the welds on the sprocket side and bent it into the chain which the chain rubbed against so might be replacing that as well depending on how bad, I caught it quick and bent it back out but then hit another fat rock which broke the welds on the disc side .... lol. So I've broke two UM plates at the mounts and now have broke an AC plate at the welds in two places. I'm gonna be lookin into a .250, I know someone makes one.

Also another little weird thing happened but posted that in the misc.

Lastly, ordered a stabilizer today when I got home, I figure it's a must for a wide quad now that I have had some time on it

Awk will only use stock swinger skids on his. He says the aluminum ones never last on rocks. I know I've beat up my stocker and its still straight.
I want to get a stabilizer also. Which one did you order?

Just a streamline ... but I've checked out your build a bit (nice job by the way) and I think you'll realize that you'll quickly benefit from one as well. Going to a 48-50 inch quad is much different in steering and with your motor you'll want it. I've been steering through the throttle, as I get used to it, but I think a stabilizer will help.

And yea funny, I sold AWK my stocker swingarm skid .... lol, I didnt want to use it because it exposes the carrier but maybe I'd have better luck gettin another one and welding in a plate ...it probably be cheaper as well as I've racked up like 200 dollars in broken ones

So got this in the mail today ...

Straight from 1983, it was still in the package, the foam in the arms had turned to dust and shook out ... but other than that which didn't effect anything it is a mint jersey that matches my decals and color of my quad ... try to find one of these.

Welding extra plates on the stock skid would work well if you want more coverage.
Thanks for the compliment. I've got a stabilizer in my todo list.

I bend stockers all the time on mine. If i was you i would make an identical skid as like the aluminum ac one but make it out of steel you could prob pay someone around you to build one cheaper than the 80 it cost for a new aluminum one.

awesome blaster man. im really liking those tires i may just have to get those for my 400ex. What size u running 22 rears and 22 or 23 fronts? How u liking them, they pretty heavy?

Thx ... and they are 22's all around. I bought em as a cheap alternative to my Klaws but have ended up liking them better for the trails I ride. and yes theya rte slightly heavy they are 6ply

Love the build and the attention to detail. Waiting patiently for BOTM voting to open up. You got my vote.

Thank you, it's hard competition this month so I don't have my hopes up but every vote counts and I appreciate the comments.

Cole- I didn't see the second part of your question, suspension is awesome such a night and day difference. Instead of getting pogo'd in the ass by my stocker it rides so smooth. Even over rocks you feel as if you are riding level and the suspension is actually doing it's job. I have the alignment dialed in great to so between the tracking and suspension it's crazy. Im only 165 so stock shocks are way to stiff and I think the fact that the arms and shocks are taking up so much more of the hits now was adding to the need for a stabilizer. Best thing is I spent a half hr or so riding the same switchback to see how far I could push it into the corner before hittin two wheels. It wouldn't happen, with some leaning (over the quad and into the kickup) and throttle control, It just goes in hard until the rear slides to the point of countersteer, hence the throttle control to straighten out, this is with the back wheel at the edge of the trail, I do notice on the street though that the front suspension will take up the corner while the rear straight axle cannot to the same point raising one wheel in the rear but not the corresponding front...regardless if you are going from stock to your setup now prepare to have an all new rideI:I

Im running 20" holeshot XC on the back and 21" kenda dominators on the front right now they do ok but i need something more aggressive. I was actually wanting to get those ITP quadcross XC tires but now that i seen yours i wanna try out those bear claws. what u think the difference would be going from 21's to 22's on the front besides the extra inch of ground clearance. im thinking it will make it prone to wheeling more also...which would be cool for playing but crappy for hill climbs lol

@B-1 - I don't really notice a bad prone to wheeling with the extended swing but the throttle response will easily pull it onto two-wheels.

Okay, so future plans - (i've listed my motor plans already)

So ordered some new parts,

First - (found a .250)
http://prm-atv.com/MN.asp?pg=products&specific=355&from=58
I also added the TM power lip chain slider as I do not like my swingarm chain slider mount so didn't use it and rubbed my chain slightly when I broke this last one. This will be the last AM swing guard i'll buy and am not cheapin it. If I break this one I'll be fabbin a stock one as talked about.

Second - I ordered a new ignition coil, I had a problem listed in another thread, and although it seems to be fixed ... the problem (I think) stemmed from the ignition coil and I want to have a new one on hand if the problem reoccurs, and don't trust my older model one.

Third - I am ordering my new exhaust at the end of the week. In the process of selling and shipping some parts today so should cover it. I still have not 100% decided but have my mind pretty much made up that I'll be getting a black ceramic coated dynoport. I want to have my pipe, carb, etc. so I am not waiting once I send my motor for porting so next will be a new TM34. I played the waiting game one to many times building this blaster already and so am starting to collect the parts needed for my planned motor mods.

So other than that, I have a new project planned for the winter. I am currently looking for an older XT, DT, possible YZ for ground up rebuild. I have also been considering building another blaster, though do not know along what lines. I don't have need for a dragger or anything but would possibly consider doing a motor swap, I have access now to rework a frame any way I want so am thinking what I could do and am looking for a frame to start messin with. So who knows, I have a strong urge to want to tinker .... lol, so somethings gonna have to get going soon or I'm gonna lose my mind.

After reading this whole thread start to finish, all I can say is "Damn." You sure did a nice job with this Blaster. The quality and determination you have is unbelievable. What I find really cool is that your suspension makes your Blaster sit higher... I love that look.

Wow! Makes mine look like ragged out junk. Give me a couple of years or a good Lotto win and mine will be close.lol.

Thanks it has taken a lot of time, parting out, selling parts, addin parts and as you can see I'm not done. Like you, it's a work in progress. Don't get down on yours though man ... I respect all lookin to make their blasters better and we all have to work with what we got? I think alot think I spent alot of money or have deep pockets but it's not the case. It's why the build was slow and I spent yrs collectin parts and selling parts to buy more and looking for deals and making friends who could help me on the cheap. It's why I have a lot to thank. Hell your even rockin nerfs I sold to put towards this build....lol
