okay... so my blaster recently had a reed fail. not sure if that was the cause of the problem or a result.

it started missing under full throttle and then eventually wouldnt run. had some pinging sounded like detonation to me. so now i have put new reeds in and it is still running bad. when in neutral it revs right up very quickly. however, when in gear it misses and pings.

mods are: gutted silencer, KN air filter, no airbox lid, jet kit, boyesen power reeds.

it ran great until this past saturday. thanks for your help!

oopps sorry no tors. and it is a 1998 im pretty sure. probably going to order a new coil. oh this is on a brand new plug too.

mine did the same thing so i took off the carb and found a tiny piece of a leaf in the main jet! btw it turned the pipe running to the silencer purple and burned some of my packing out!

it iss not running lean unless it is clogged. checked the plug before problem and it was perfect. i was almost leaning towards a bad coil since i have had the carb off a lot and cleaned it every time. i will check again tomorrow. thanks for the replies guys.

Does anyone think it could be the coil? That is what I was leaning towards.

dosent seem like it to me but sh*t, stranger things have happened. if youve got one layin around just toss it on and see what happens. my blaster did that popping crap recently and it was a leaking head gasket.

well it will be getting looked at tomorrow morning and saturday closer... hoping it is an easy fix like a clogged jet. just dont understand why it would rev right up so easily in neutral...

btw the lights also flickered right when it started running bad and wont come on at all now.

i know my blaster was reving high nd it was due to the carb cap not having a good seal. im not to sure aout the lights tho. sounds maybe like a short or ur stator might be bad i dunno.

I am going to change the plug to another new one and see what happens.. hopefully thats the problem. then a coil... and then look at the stator hopefully cheaper is what fixes it.

The lights use a separate coil on the stator, the ignition has it's own. But it's still an interesting symptom. What they have in common is the ground. I would follow every damn wire from the harness that goes to ground and check connections before throwing money at it. (although plugs are cheap and always a good idea)

A poor connection could give you adequate power at idle and then crap out when there is more demand, like high RPM.

good point.. I have been known to have problems with grounds lol

One of my 50's was accidentally grounded out and it took me a minute to figure it out.

have you painted any parts before it started running crappy. I've seen it before where the grounds get painted over and it doesn't run right or stops running altogether. almost sounds like carb to me though because when in neutral it runs fine but under load it doesn't. check or re torque all your motor bolts too.

well it is definitely not the plug or the carb. ordered a new coil and flywheel key just in case. had another yamaha have problems similar and the key was sheared.

not the coil or cap either...

no one else has ever had a problem similar to this? carb was checked for leaks and cleaned multiple times.

flywheel is coming off tomorrow. there was some condensation under the cover... could that ause problems? we are supposed to go riding next weekend and i really wanted to take all the machines.

figured it out. broken timing pplate. ordered a ricky stator adjustable one.
