yours looks tight too, i was gonna ask around for maintanace on it , but u said mothers, sweet, what do u think about a clear engine paint, i was gonna test it on a little area to see how it would hold up

I don't know if a clear coat would work with the heat from the engine. Don't know if it would cause discoloration? I usually spend about a half an hour with some mothers and a rag.

I clear coated my engine, its just painted black thou. I have the clutch cover polished and I did the mothers thing for awhile but I had to keep up on it and it is a off road vehicale so its gets dirty. the clear coat makes it so I can just hose it off and be done. The clear coat doesn't hold up too well on the header pipe but everywhere else is fine.

god i wish i wasnt lazy and could do that. who knows maybe i will. kinda a shame to toss a unpolished engine into a sexy new painted quad.

chrismajcher, what grits of sandpaper did you use? the best way to get rid of the most scratches is to go up pretty high on the grit. when i polish parts i start w/ a 240 to smooth out the main sh*t then a 600 to a 1000 or so to a 1500 or 2000 grit. then i go about polishing.
and you don't need all those compounds. i usually go over it once w/ the red compound then once again w/ the white. sometimes i'll do the green or blue afterward if i think it's necessary.
but the sanding is the most important part. are you doin it on a cordless or corded drill?

So basicly you take your engine apart and clean everything up with special chemicals and sh*t.

Is it this easy to do or is there alot you have to know. I would take the time to do this i just want to make sure nothing breaks in the process.

there's def more to it than just cleaning it off. polishing means you're actually almost "melting" off a layer of the metal to make it smooth and shiny. if done well it will look like chrome as you can see from 245stroker's avatar.
it's not tricky, just very time consuming. the first part is the longest and most trying: sanding. if your parts have a layer of clearcoat on them, which they probably do, then you can ease part 1 a little by stripping the clear w/ gasket remover or aircraft stripper. the start w/ a low grit and sand and sand and sand till every inch looks nice and smooth aside from the scratch marks. then you go up in grits by steps (300, 600, 1000, 1500), but these sandings are just to get rid of the original scratch marks made by your low grit sanding (i like to use 240) and don't take as much time.
then you get to polishing. you can use a corded drill w/ a chuck arbor and any assortment of polishing wheels or maybe an air tool w/ polishing attachments or a dremel. i like to use a bench grinder w/ a polishing wheel attached. but sometimes you just need something smaller to get in the crevices and cracks. you need to use a compound on whatever polishing tool you choose. i like to start w/ red, then finish w/ white, and maybe i'll go up to green or blue if needed.

To make maintaining it easier there are some sealants on the market so it wont dull. I recommend just using some high temp clear engine paint because it's cheap, but there are better products on the market. I can't imagine the time consumption of polishing the fins on the cylinder and head. My banshee engine is fully polished, cases and all....lot of work, but worth it in the end.

ok guys i am new in the sport bike thing here now whats the chrome plate mounted by the pipe at the front of the bike? May sound stupid but just wondering. thanks
