Hey,
I got a 04 blaster with toomey kit, boyeson rad valve and rejet. The bike runs great and awesome in once it hits the high rpms. However, when i launch or do anything before i get to the top end, its is sluggish and then all of sudden the power just kicks in like crazy. I know 2 strokes are known for top end, but is there anything i can do to improve the quickness off the line?

I havent plug the oil injector yet, running it since i got oil in it. Will premixing gas help at all?

Thanks, Luke

is your airbox lid on? if so take it off and see if it helps. if it does you are too rich on your jetting. what jets you got in there now??

lid is off. i forget what came with the kit, 310 or 320...but that seems right on. i pulled the plug and it looks great.

Yeah. Sounds rich. Try dropping needle a notch and maybe open up air screw a half turn or so.

Uhmmm..scratch what he said..if your not sure what your doing, its better to errror on the side of ft as opposed to the side of a new top end.

1. start your bike and let it warm up. now that its warm turn the idle up slightly, then turn the air screw in 1/4 turn at a time, pausing every turn for the motor to catch up. once the motor start running rough, turn the airscrew out 1/2 turn and leave it.

2. raise the needle all the way, hopefully the bike falls on its face. then drop the needle one clip at a time untill it pulls good and strong at half throttle, then do a half throttle plug chop.

when jetting only change 1 thing at a time, and write down or remember what that 1 change did exactly.

The Toomey kit specifies putting the needle clip in the #3 position from the top. Was this done? (richens low to mid)

No i didnt do this. The toomey instructions said not to on the newer blaster models, but i will do it anyway. Like i said, the bike is awesome once the power kicks in, just pretty weak and then it just flys.

toomey's are top endish pipes the way it is, but anything but weak in my opinion down low, remember the directions are just a guide line with the kit, you might try a differnt pilot or clip position to start with, my toomey on stock carb was pretty punchy down low and mid at least compared to stock

Worth a try, certainly. I don't know why it would matter by year. If that doesn't help, then just follow the instruction phragle gave. That was dead-on how to troubleshoot the prob.

Hey update to my same problem, adjusted the air screw (had to go almost 2.5 turns out before it ran even half-right). Mixed up another set of fresh gas and put that in. adjusted idle screw.
so here's what i'm thinking.....
Clogged Jet?
Reeds not laying flat??
wrong 2 stroke oil used ? (not sure of the difference in types of 2 stroke oil)

First off, it would have been better to start a new thread rather than resurrect this one.

Oil choice is not important as long as it is an oil that is designed for premixing. It IS important though to be consistent with your mix because changing oil/fuel ratio changes your air/fuel mixture.

If you haven't cleaned the carb yet then that is where you want to start, paying special attention to cleaning the pilot jet and spraying thru the passages. While you have it off, go ahead and check the reeds. Then get back to us.

My son's quad is doing the same thing . It's .40 over 290 main jet ,stock pilot and fmf chamber, stock silencer. It had no aibox cover when I got it, now has a drilled cover with screen epoxied to it. Going to start with the needle at the lowest groove today and move it up untill it runs right. If it doesen't then i'll try new reeds and start again. Air screw out 2&1/8th turns. let you know how it turns out.

Got mine to run a lot better. Needle on top groove. Needs air filter, runs better without it,waiting for k&n. Also need a silencer. I've worked on bikes and trucks alot over the years, wish people would realize an engine was a balanced system from airfilter to muffler tip. my blaster came setup unfinished, guess i'll have to finish it.
