We had a LTZ400 that when we got had a twist throttle on it. I rode it a few times. The twist throttles on a quad suck. On a dirt bike you don't have to turn the handlebars that much, but on a quad you have to turn them quite a bit. Keeping your hand in the same position while using a twist throttle on an ATV is a biotch.
motoman i feel the same way, my neighbor had a trx450 with a twist and i never rode anything with a twist before and im like what the hell. Like u said, turning with a twist is a son of a biotch. And i'v seen many people with twists on quads crash with them beacuse they're hard to get used to. well thats why they say they crash haha
i say stick with a thumb throttle. however i know some guys that ride long distances and they prefer the twist for the simple fact that there thumb will get tired over time but then when they are ready to ride hard they switch back to the thumb throttle because they would probobly crash with a twist throttle trying to hold on to the bike in turns and climbing hills.
i have always preferred the thumb throttle on quads.. i got a twist with a used set of bars i got recently and i might give it a try.. probably end up taking it off though.
Put one on the kids Blaster cuz it came with the 250r carb we put on. Was following him on the next trip to the dunes when his right front caught a big grass clump and pegged it. It was a cool lookin, twisting, wheelie crash over the clump. Wasn't too bad cuz it was kinda slow in the sand but that was the last twist throttle ride for us. Twist is for 2 wheels.
my impression of them are they are clearly dangerous on a quad,
i never thought of the steering, turning of the bars, what i saw was, when the front end comes up the throttle will peg, becuase we have to hang on to the bars more, a bike rider, on the skinnier bike, uses his legs to "pinch" the bike to hang on and not rely on the bars so much
my buddy rode a twist throttle on his heavily modded banshee and went to go over a log and lost his grip and had 1 hand on the twist throttle side and went like 5feet up in the air then needed a new topend
Hey hey hey. Calm it down on the twist grip hating. Once you get used to it they rock. I have absolutely NO problems at all on mine. I put a SideWinder Twister for a 300ex on mine and it works amazing.
Call me suicidal, but I loved to give my Banshee a good 'ol twist of the wrist. It was fun after getting used to it. That being said, I'm not gonna risk wrecking by doing it again. The Blasty stays with its stock thumb throttle; like others have said, turning is more of an adventure with the twister.
Jeez where did your sense of adventure go? I almost wrecked getting used to it but now I love it. Haha I hit a jump, cleared a ditch, hit another ditch, missed a tree and clipped a shed all at once when my throttle stuck. Lol

It's physics.
Be real. The difference in turning the bars on a quad compared to a bike is 10 fold.
Not to mention the advantage of only having one wheel steerin in the center VS 2 wheels off to the side.
It's not a whos the man issue but just the way it is.
That said in a place like sand dunes or a big open dirt area twist throttle would make some sence.
Guys that grew up on a bike might appreciate the familar feeling of a twisty.
Drag racers sometimes prefer a twist throtle cause it easier to modulate and their only goin straight.
In real life settings on a quad the thumb throttle is the way to go.
