The build has begun!

It looks wide as hell with those banshee rims on there huh? I just hope I'm satisfied with that shock placement....if not i'll devise up another mount! The wonders of a chop saw and a welder...oh and can't forget the grinder and dremel!

Time and patience....and money! Lots of that fo sho...

Got some round tube gusseting done on the swingarm just now. Came up with some ideas too on spliffing it up too.

Time for a shower and blow out all the black boogies from the weld smoke...

Changed up the shock design. I like the way it sits now...still not welded up yet but this is how it sits mocked up again

Gimme the scoop on the measurements...I just put the spring back on it because I added a 1x1 brace in front of the shock and checked spring clearance on the brace. Keep in mind this is a 400EX shock....so if you got ideas then let em' fly!

I am assuming you're talking maybe measure from top of rim to a designated spot on the frame (preferred the top) and see what my travel is? I would also like for the 4 wheeler to sit level to slightly higher in the rear. Well level when i sat on it...so i am assuming you know all the measurements since you've done this 100 times over...but i will be doing some jumping and some track racing, along with some trail riding. Not an MX racer tho...

if i was you man i would wait with the shock mount untill you get a rolling chassis then you will know how she sits just a thought thats how i made the swingarm on mine bolted the arm up jacked the frame up to where i wanted it to sit and welded up the shock mountand BAM<----Emeril

i sure you will get it right in the end man...you need to get busy on the build doooooooood

Yeh but I also wanna hear what Phragle has to say....we may have something here that will affect riding styles. That is a good idea tho Ryan! I am going with different front a arms too....so that will affect the riding as well. I don't think I am going over +2+1 tho...+3+1 may be too wide for the trails

measure from the top of the axle to a spot directly up on the frame, then take a tiedown and pull the swingarm up as far as it will go and measure again. then subtract to get the travel number. once you have that you can start figuring out how much sag you want in it.

you can go +3 on the front the blaster is narrow to begin with. Also with the swingarm compressed make sure that the frame isnt going to be hitting the ground before the shock bottoms out and that you have clearance for the silencer, brake caliper etc.

I still gotta get tires....getting 20x11x9's. I still should have clearance for the silencer etc....but will check by bolting it on and compressing it! I was thinking +3 but my mind was disagreeing with me...but the rearend looked pretty wide with those rims. Don't wanna sit like a hot rod...

what about the shock rubber stop on the shaft? Could you possibly cut about an inch off of that for added clearance or would that be bad for the shock? That rubber stop is like 3" or longer.

What would be a good travel distance?

you want something between 10 and 12"... that rubber bump stop actually compresses pretty good when you bottom out. just measure the diameter of a 20" tire, take half the number, then with the suspesion compressd and tied up measure from the axle down. did the tape hit the floor? remember you have to add about 2" for tire squish when you bottom out. I wish I was closer, I could dial all this in for you in an hour or two..

Well I managed to get the spring back off and measuring from a spot on the axle, it started at 18 3/4", and them went to 10". So almost 9" of travel. If that rubber stop squishes an inch after landing, then that would be my 10". But as of now, all the way to the rubber stop was almost 9" of travel.

Doin good! you realize that if you take the spring off the stock rear shock and cycle the suspnesion you only actually (forget the exact number) around 5 1/2" of travel?? so you have just about doubled the travel. I dont know if your mount is commited yet (drilled holes etc) if its not try moving the mount 1/4" foreward and you would be suprised how much difference a 1/4 inch makes. your droop angle on the swingarm is pretty conservative from the pik and the increased "height" can be overcome with aditional sag to give you the ride height you want. Oh... when you do your first test ride, crank the rebound dampening up several clicks first.

Really?! I never cycled the stock suspension...but i guess you get concerned once you get into this whole geometry thing. So you're saying, if I move the mount forward about 1/4", I could gain a little more travel? I noticed the stock shock was moved to quite a bit of an angle when i looked at previous pics.

As far as the spring adjustment is concerned, where should that be set at for first ride? Right now i got it set all the way up so i could strong arm the spring down to get it off easier.

I know there is a rebound adjustment and...can't for the life of me remember what the other setting was called...long day!
