I come from 2 wheels and I use the front brakes aswell as the rear

I was wondering on a 4 wheeler how important is the front brakes, I have working fronts but they are weak (cable) and I have an xt225 front caliper that I can make up mounts for the rear disc and figuer out a master cylinder/ lever setup.

will this keep me safe?

I don't use my front brakes nearly as much as my backs, but they help a lot. They get you stopped much quicker when you need it, and if you are used to using the fronts you probably will still use them on a quad.

If you have the front drum brakes and all the adjustment is out of the cable, you can move the arm on the back of the hub a couple of teeth to get them working better.

I actually had to move the arm your talking bout on the right side when I put new shoes on so that the cable would reach through...must be someone did that trick before

the left side still needs new shoes.

i guess what I was asking is with a good rear hydro brake is hydro fronts critical?

I suppose for me they would be I would hate to come around a corner at durhamtown and have one of them little fellers trying to pick up his crf50 and not be able to stop.

I have to say what in the world was yamaha thinking...putting these crappy brakes on a quad with zero engine braking!!!

More brake is always better. It's all a matter of preference I suppose. With a good hydro rear you will definately be better than the stock rear setup.... Yamaha was just trying to keep the cost down on them would be my assumption
