Do I need a bottom end rebuild too?

Well guys the inevitable finally happened. We went out to Ocotillo Wells this weekend and the motor locked up on my Blaster. Luckily it was at the end of the day yesterday and we weren't very far from our camp.

Since there's so much great info on this site, I'm gonna try and do this rebuild myself. My first question is how do I know if I need a bottom end rebuild too?

Thx in advance for your help

yes and its safer to just split the cases and check because the peices may be laying in the bottom end!

Ok. I finally got the head and the cylinder off and there was debris everywhere (please see the pics). Does anyone have a reccomendation as to how I can get all of these little pieces out of the bottom after I split the cases?

I was thinking I might use a vacuum or something??? Is it ok to spray carb cleaner in there?

i would split the cases and clean it all out its the safest way.although u can flush the bottom end out with keroseen.drain the oil and put the plug back in fill the case up with keroseen then gently kick it over alittle while..then drain it out and keep doing it it takes time..aslong as there are no real big pieces u should be ok...but if u go with the splitting cases as i would do use parts cleaner and clean it out real good

From what I can tell ( and I am totally new to engine repair) it looks ok. I think I'm going to spilt the cases. There is a lot of debris in there. I tried to load a pic of the piston but it was too big.

Something (maybe the debris from the rings?) punched a dime sized hole in the top of the piston. So I need to really get it cleacned out.

Does anyone have any idea what it costs to get the cylinder bored?

I always use just hot water and soap and an air compressor. It works great and the manual even tells you to do that.In your manual it will tell you crank specs for play so you can measure.Basically it should have no up and down play but a very little side to side.I have done 3 blaster motors int the past 3 months and they are relatively easy to work on.I suggest before you tear it down get a clutch holding tool(does other things also) from rmatv, and a flywheel puller and if you have the money the puller to seperate the cases.I use an autozone puller to split cases that I modified. And of course a manual.Good luck.

local shops here charge $65-75 to bore a cylinder.....

while you in the cases, i would replace the crank bearings.... and clearly inspect your rod, and rod bearing....

youll need a new piston kit, complete gasket kit, seal kit, and crank bearings

check everything else over carefully while your in there... its alot easier to fix it all now... rather than have something else go wrong later...

let us know if we can help you with the parts..... we have everything you need for a rebuild in stock
