need opinions/help
my girl was usin the puter during the steeler game on sunday. and new not to bother me while i was watchin the game, somehow she got one of tthem spyware type "scanning ur hardive" deals goin on, it wouldnt stop or turn off, so instead of callin me, she unpluuged it and pulled the battery.
then it wouldnt reboot, and now after using the recovery disc's twice,
it still wont fire, it looks like the recovery is workin, goin to 100% each time, ejects the disc, asks for a reboot, then nuthin,
black screen with little cursor in upper right corner, no response to any keys ???
it's a 1 and 1/2 year old dell insperon laptop running
windows xp , zero troubles till now ???
im thinkin the harddrive fried ??? but if so, why does it take the recovery discs ?????
thoughts appreciated, im on my phone right now. so i'll check back from time to time, but wont be on to immedietly answer
specific questions, bare with me though

hahahahaaaaa, she just does freebies, sample and sweepstakes sites, and walks funny every morning from what uncle awk gives her
serious opinions please, not into readin a bunch of bust my balls on my phone, we will play all you guys want after i get my puter back

You'll have to delete your partitions. Your hard drive isn't fried until it makes a clicking sound when you tried starting it. They probably just corrupted it good.

dont delete anything joe.
call me if you need to.
forget the recovery discs, they are useless unless u need a spot for your beer.

start it up
while it is rebooting, keeping hitting f8
you will get a menu, asking if you want to boot in safe mode
choose safe mode with networking
it will run with minimal drivers and nothing more then it needs to run
click start/programs/accesories/system tools/system restore

pick a restore point before sunday, go back a month if you can
let it do its thing, you should be ok when its done, run as normal
you wont lose anything you had previous to that date, and you wont lose any pics or documents.

again, if you get stuck, call me, i'll walk you thru it or do a remote hook up and fix it from here

that is all

im going to go dream about all the ass im gonna pick up with my new shelby,

o, wait, im already dreaming, im married. lol

Good idea man. I got tired of pittle f*cking around with safe mode, so I keep all my important stuff on my flash drive and don't run antivirus and just reformat as normal. Rep for this idea.

i already choose to save the old sh*t the first time then it fired up, i started doin my thing and it quit again, the scond time i did a full recovery and did choose to not save all my sh*t, and use the discs recover files, not the partioned off recovery
still nuthin

before i did any recovery sh*t, i tried all the f keys to gt to the menu, nuthin doin, only the black scre
i've one tons of safe mode, restore to ealier date shoit in the past, and have even built a whole pc from scratch before, but this one has me stumped, no matter what i do, it just goes back to the blank screen with blinking cursor, only,

when you reboot in safe mode you need to go back to before the problem.. and once it comes up you need to delete and uninstall anything that is a bad folder.. thats what happened to me when my comp crashed lastime...

you need to get a malware program on there and some form of system mechanic on it,

Reboot in safemode with networking.
Download and install Antimalwarebyes
Apply any updates and do full system scan.
I dont think the hard drive is corrupted it sounds like there is corrupted boot information which is why it will not boot properly.

haha it happened to me too man, my wife was doing something and i ended up with spyware, it wouldnt even take a disc, the bad sh*t embedded itself in my run file, which sounds like it did to you too, so it was in my computer, i got everything backed up on a 500gb hard drive, so i took it to bestbuy because i had the black tie protection on it and it was covered otherwise i would have cracked it open and went to town, ill get it back tomorrow... good luck it sux i have this comp for 2 yrs and no problems, then the wife clicks on something and BAM, im fu*t, lol

had that happen to me a few yrs ago.i had vista at the time.i just booted from dvd/cd drive and had my vista dvd in the drive then it asked, repair my computer.worked like a charm

nuthin is working, cant get to the safemode screen, only the bios screen, set everything to default, nuthin
just talked to acidrayn, we came to the conclusion, which i suspected, that the hd is fried, gonna grab a new one, and he's sendin me an open copy of windows xp, fug this vista garbage
so we shall see
thanx to all who gave input, and my bro rayn !!
reps for all when i get, back on wit the puter

hmm sounds fishy, a virus wouldnt fry ur hard drive, maybe corrupt ur data but not physically damage ur hard drive.

sounds more like bios problems.

id say format, get new windows, dont update past service pack 2 ( i bin running xp for years) get a decent anti virus, i have been using fsecure for like 3 years and never ONCE had a virus get onto my pc, there are great free ones like Avira and Avast if u dont want to pay, make sure ur anti virus is on high if u going on dodge websites and keep ur firewall on, try "Stinger" the second u suspect a virus.

Start virus scans imediatly if u get suspicious and scan ur pc atleast once every 2 weeks, safe surfing bud!

HEY NOOB, i talked to him for about an hour last night,
he went thru all the hoops and rings of fire.

i had almost the same exact prob last year, it puts the hard drive into a constant write/rewrite loop and locks it up.

he did a reformat and cant get it too boot now.
sounded like his bios was up to date and good.

i recomended he get a new hard drive, im mailing him a copy of xp right now, since he only has vista crap, if that dont boot from disk, then he will install the new hard drive,
i told him he can get a external hard drive case only, throw that old drive into it and use it as a slave most likely, as a slave it s not looking for the boot sector to load the os, and using it as a slave, he could have gotten his data back much easier, but he already re formatted it and does not care at this point.
i run xp, vista was the biggest pos since millenium and i run win2000 on 3 other machines, its rock solid.

we will keep this updated.

I too run XP. If he is "downgrading" from vista to xp then he may have some issues with drivers missing. This is only a real problem if its the LAN driver that is not installed.

I do not run anti virus on any of my machines but I am the only user so I know what goes in and out. The computer I have that I let others use has a free copy of AVG and Antimalwarebytes.

vista sucks u know what i had more probs with that system than any other. i now have windows 7 which kicks ass!! xp is dinasoar stuff

just a little more FYI,
i use Advanced Systen Care, at least twice a week, Spybot Search and Destroy, weekly, and Threatfire. always running, i run no antivirus, no problems
i have 2 ~ 60gig hd's in my pc, full of downloaded sh*t you wouldnt believe and music from limewire, i know what and where is safe
i'm startin to think this was more of a heat issue, my girl was in the bedroom for like 4/5 hours that day, while my son and i watched the football games, with the puter sitting on just her lap, blocking the airflow into the vents on the bottom, i noticed it felt hot when i took over ?
it seems like it is writing tio the hd when i do the recovery, but then cant read from it when i try to boot
locked up hd, as rayn and i concluded ?
