just like it says need some thinking of getting one always liked the look of the old bike. alls i know it is 486cc if i remember right and has a 4 speed. can anybody add to that with an experience with one or something thanks.

thought they were a5 speed.. super torquey big cc thumper 2 stroke... load and loads of ass end power like the cr/rm/wr... not as easy to find parts for... i did have alink saved on my old ahrd drive that has piston and ring kits for 'vintage' bikes and the 490 was on there..

from what i hear the yz400 was a better motor

i know of one for sale asking for offers the only thing the motor needs is an air filter and it needs a new back tire.

They are a 5spd and basically the fastest aircooled 2stroke you can get your hands on from yamaha. I would look out for a yz465 or yz400 as the 490 is considered pretty unreliable. They had pinging issues or something like that. They had no counterbalancer so prepare to vibrate your balls off. The polaris 400 2stroke i rode was an auto and that was more than enough power I would need, so brace yourself for a ride haha.

haha i know i am but iv ridden a cbr 500R and i was fine on that im not stuiped i ride to my ability i know she will have the power i want when im 30. its more to show i love the old bikes i know that sounds stuiped but to me its more family thing you would have to know alittle bit more about me to know why i want one..

iv been told them 400's have even more power, iv heard about that pinging to they said you have to have the head redone to stop that.

Yup the 490 has the power but it doesn't last that long.
Yamaha put out tons of service bulletins for it and made small changes to the motor year after year. Nothing really helped. It's main problem is it pings, seizes and impossible to jet right.
As a quad motorboth it and the big CR tends to vibrate really bad.
If you don't know think broken welds and numb hands and arms. I've seen lots of different set-ups but nothing fixes it.
It works pretty good for a 3 wheeler though they don't suffer from vibs too much.
I still wouldn't mind owning a 490 dirtbike. You can get the head re-chambered to help the pings and a carb from this era could help with the jetting issues. Finding parts isn't that hard because it was produced for 10 years starting with 82 and ending somewhere around 1992.

ya i would get the 400 but what those were produced for what like 3 years or so and parts from aftermarket are hard to find it seems like the 490 seems to be easier to find and parts are more avalible and some of the suspension parts are the same this is just some info i found while brosing through the Dennis Kirk cat.

its cool.. i know what you mean... im actually in the market for avintage bike my self... like mid to late 70s two stroke dirt bike/ enduro.. just for the 'vintage' factor.. i think a old school dirt bike with studded tires would be the cat's ass on the lake next winter!!!.. wont be the fastest thing out there but it sure wil be cool!!!...

i found aold 75? harley 250cc dirt bike/ enduro for really cheap on CL

here is the skinny.... that bottom end has been around since dirt began...started as a 400 grew to a 465 then the 490 and finally a 490 called a 500. also different 'styles' the yz's were mostly 4 speeds while the it's (enduro models) were 5 speeds.. the it's also had a lighting coil in the stator. all but the latest wr 500 needed the heads recut because they pinged like mad. as for a blaster transplant... look for an IT or wr bottom for the 5 speed gear box, you want a late model yz or wr cylinder, as they had the exhaust outlet going foreward. the earlier bikes had the exhaust on the side. the kickstarter can he heated and warped to work.. as for starting it...eat your wheaties.

Yup yup good info phragle.
You forgot the IT425. My Blasty is rocking the IT bottom and the YZ top although my year 400 both bikes had 5 speed trannys.
My advice has always been go with a 400 or the 465 for a heart transplant.
With the 465 the 490 jug bolts right on if you wanna get crazy one day.

that thing is mint cfed. and ok im looking for a enduro bottom end and like what YZ top end do i want the 400,465,490,250? you lost me on the top end part

If your getting a 490 bottom end the only other top-end that will fit is the 465.
