Hey guys! I finally figured out my wiring harness and got spark but I'm not quite sure how to set my timing. Does the motor need to be at TDC and start at 0 degrees? Is there a specific stock timing setting? I know my motor is bored .30 over I have a FMF fatty pipe I'm not positive but I think I have stock jets although the guy I bought it off of said it was jetted for the pipe.. When I put it all back together I put the timing at 0 degree but my buddy said that the motor doesn't need to be at TDC? I don't think he is correct lol but I tried it anyways and kicked like 20 times and it just popped once and didn't fire. Any help is appreciated awesome forum and I will be a contributing member soon!

Well if you have a stock stator then there is no adjusting to the timing, you can't mess it up. The way to tell if its stock is by looking at the holes on the stator that the screws go through to mount it, if the holes are round n just big enough for the screws then you are all set, no adjusting what so ever.

Yip, stock stator is not adjustable, just line up the holes and you away, I think stock timing is something like 16*, but thats all built into the stator. its fool proof really. I do believe the CDI unit has a auto advancing spark curve and it is not just linear, hence automatically advancing timing with increasing RPM.

The woodruff key sets the timing for you. Like said above there is no way to advance or retard the timing on a stock stator. You should open up your carb and see what main jet you have. Never trust the PO. Glad you got that spark problem figured out.

I got the stator off amazon, it's adjustable for +10 through - 10 degrees of timing I've had it at zero and plus or minus 5 degrees and it still won't start. I rebuilt the carb a few weeks ago and the jets that came in the rebuild kit had the same numbers as the jets that were in it, so I'm guessing that the PO lied about the jets

Is it flooded from trying to start it?

What is the compression?

No more than +4 on the timing.

Change those jets to suit the FMF.

Do you have a strong healthy spark?

I'm guessing it was flooded, I let it sit over night I'm getting a new plug and trying again in the morning. It has 125ish compression. The thing I don't understand is it ran fine when I first got it. Started up first kick every day when it was cold then if I'd stall it when hot I could kick and try to pop start it all day with no luck. I thought it was a dirty carb bc the previous owner said the carb hadn't been cleaned in years. I ordered a new carb kit and everything was the same inside I put everything in its right place but I'm not too sure on how to set the float up? I'm thinking it's getting too much fuel

I cleaned the carb put it back together, and found out that I had no spark. I totally rebuilt the wiring harness with a new coil, cdi, and stator and I can't seem to get it to fire up. It's popped once after like 20 kicks I get all excited lol and then nothing. Today I kicked it like 100 times and it rumbled for a second and didn't fire up. I pulled the plug and it was wet. So I figured it was flooded so I'm letting it sit for the night

Check your float height, needle in the middle, air screw 1.5 turns out from lightly seated position, ensure you have a fat blue spark, new plug, remove tors and parking brake (if 03+)

Float level should 20 to 21.5mm on a stock carby.

you want to turn the carb and hold it on a slight angle to measure the float height, like shown here......

it should just barely be touching the inner needle, not depressing it,

It is possible to check the fuel level by attaching a length of clear plastic tubing to the drain nipple , lifting it up the side of the carby, and cracking the drain screw.

The fuel should show in the pipe to the level of the carb body above the float bowl gasket.

Well today I found the problem, my flywheel is cracked! Right where the woodruff key slot is and it's sitting slightly off where it should be =/ now I need a new flywheel. So I'm in search of our events cheap locally if I can't find one I'll have to get one from eBay and wait. Anyone near williamsport, pa wanna sell me a cheap flywheel? Haha thanks for all the help guys I love this forum it's the best of the best
