When I got my 240 kit it said in the instructions to use a BR9ES spark plug. Is this correct? I am doing plug chops now and my plug looks like 4 or 5 on the link below. It could be be too cold? Or is my jetting too rich maybe.

Spark Plugs

whats your jetting? and are you doing wide open throttle plug chops? i think your rich but answering those 2 questions will narrow it down

i wouldnt put too much faith in that chart, #17 and higher are all lean plugs and they have them listed as "best" or "good". you could drop ur main a little but you gotta take in to account that the blaster is air cooled and the longer you run it the hotter it will get, now i dont know how long you were riding before the plug chop but you prolly not trail riding it then chopping. what ratio do you mix your oil? 32:1 is best (4oz per gallon). also what needle is in the pj carb?, DGH is used alot.

Well I was riding it on a road for about 5 mins before doing the plug chop, it was very hot that day as well 30 deg C. Oil is mixed at 32:1 and i'm not sure on the needle, will have to check that tonight.

Is the BR9ES correct though? What does everyone else run? I just wanted to make sure so my jetting isn't messed up because of the wrong plug.

Alright so I am just going to focus on jetting then. I took the slide out and the needle, it turns out its a CEL and I have it in the 3rd (middle) slot. This run was done with a 155 main jet WOT for 10 sec.
I think it's just rich, but it looks a little grayish in real life not pure black, don't know if thats normal. It also looks like there is some wetness around the outside indicating again that it's rich, I think.

I also dropped in a 150 main last night and was it ever fast I:I. I did a WOT run and the plug was similar to before, maybe a little more brown on the ground strap. I think I will be safe to drop another size and test again. I hope I see a brown plug soon, I don't like this blackish gray.

That first set of plug pics is too dark. For a 10 second WOT burst you shouldn't be able to see any dark coloring on the ceramic, only down around the base of the ceramic down inside the threaded part. The ceramic should still be mostly white.

You're in a very good range though for starters. Just step down a notch at a time until you pull that plug down to a dull brown color and you'll be good to go.

That run was with an older plug though so technically it's not a true plug chop. But I wanted to get close before I started into the new plugs because I don't have too many at my disposal. I'll drop one size and do a proper run with a new plug and post up the pic.

The pics are broken. A 9 if a hotter plug then a 8. Also if the plug was brownish/black I would stay there and be slightly rich, especally if it is running really good, no point in going to lean and risk a change of burning it up.

BR9ES is a cooler heat range then BR8ES,and that plug looks lean, greyish looking to me, the try getting a dgh needle as well

ah HP you stole it from me ha, Yea a BR9 is a colder plug. Vito suggests it to try keep the extra bore from over heating with all the extra detonation from the larger displacement and the smaller amount of heat dissipating material. Im not sure home much it actually helps but it would be a good idea to listen

Well I put in a new plug and it looks very different. To me it looks lean now. The base of the insulator has a light coloured ring only around 1/3 of it and the ground strap looks like it got hot. I will bump it up 2 sizes and try again.

you need to put in a new plug every time you do a chop or you'll get a skewed reading. to really see it you need to cut the threads off of the plug, but i'd say go up a couple sizes and you're probably going to be where you need to be

Yah definitely need to use a new plug, I learned. I can see the ring without cutting the threads so i should be able to get away with that. You guys must go through a lot of plugs cutting them up like that lol. But it's def way easier to see.

Anyway i'll try the 155 and see how it looks.
