Hi guys i have kind of a different question for you guys and i'd be great if you would help me out.Well I do all of my four-wheeling, snowmobiling, etc... with my step-dad and his side of the family. he doesnt really get the chance to help me work on my blaster anymore because he's taking over the family business soon and is either doing paperwork or we are working on trucks when he gets home.so believe it or not he had a '89 blaster when he was younger (mines a 2003) and i've heard him mention the revv on mine several times when we talk about it. he says that when he had his his wouldn't revv so high and fast. he says mine revs so stupid high and somehow he would like to make it revv like his used to. does anyone have any clue why mine revs so much higher or why his didnt rev so much? he's pretty smart with engines (he raced snocross) and he has worked on everything from a briggs&Stratton to a freekin C-15 CAT so it probably isn't something too obvious or he would have figured it out by nowB) so any feedback would be helpful, thanks!

Please list all the mods your bike has, it may help diagnose.

Does it rev high and uncontrollably at idle?

Do you know the jet sizes?

Do you premix, if so what ratio?

Have you jetted for the cooler weather?

Has your bike ever been leak tested, it should be done twice a season?

Could it be that your bike is running perfectly, and Dads was out of tune.

all the mods that i know of on the bike are a K&N air filter (and if you really need to know all of them then i also put 20x11-8 tires on it scott grips and some new ebc brake pads haha)

oh and i believe the main jet is the stock 230 the machine doesn't idle insanely high just seems normal to me if you read any of my recent threads i did not up the jet size due to the cooler weather and i blew the piston a while ago so i'll get it rebuilt but i plan on fixing this rev problem when it gets back from being rebuilt

i dont know for sure what you mean when you say "per specs" but i have had to adjust the idle screw a few times to make it idle a little slower if that helps

K&N, + cold weather #230 main jet = Boom.

Has the idle been set as per specs?

Do I read correctly, we are talking about a motor that isnt even running yet from a fresh rebuild.

nope sorry i didnt make that clear it's not running right now becuase it's blown up it hasnt been rebuilt yet but my uncle is going to pick it up and take it to a small engine shop (where he works) and rebuild the top end for me he's also going to look into a fix to why my motor is drinking so much crankcase oil (another problem i had when it ran).

Aha, another problem rears its ugly head.

Blown crankcase seal on the tranny side, sucking oil and air, another reason for boom.

Take a tip from an old fart, get a leak tester and learn how to use it, it is the most important tool in the 2 strokers box.

hey man thanks for sharing your knowledge.....and by the way that seal, the improper jetting for the K&N filter, and a list of body problems were all a result of the previous owner not me haha my stepdad and i have done nothing but good for the ol blasty haha anyway is a blown seal an easy fix when you have the top end torn apart already or would my uncle have to go quite a bit out of his way to fix that (if thats for sure the problem)

Seals can be replaced without splitting the motor.

May I apologise for my abruptness, tact is not my finest point.

Maybe many can learn at your expense, that a leak test is a must on every secondhand 2 stroke the moment it is bought, it may save hundreds of well earnt dollars.

oh i dont even know what abruptness means haha but dont worry about it :) and anyway back to the high revv problem do you have any clue what it could be?

As to your original question.
1. Yours may sound different due to clogged silencer etc.
2. He might not remember exactly how his sounded.
3. They ALWAYS run best just before they blow up, just as yours did.
4. All solid advice ^^^ above.

5.01 Make sure your uncle or who ever is working on it understands that the ports need to be champhered if it gets board out. Not being a wise @$$, and neither should you be, but there's a world of difference between a lawnmower, chainsaw and a Blaster. If they aren't champhered you'll be back after about 20 hours riding asking why it blew already.

That seal is for sure a real problem. Having to lower the idle and loosing tranny fluid are a sure sign of an air leak, as is blowing it up. Change the seal and leak test the motor before firing it up. May help also to up the main jet for the K&N filter and cold weather. Also premixing requires a larger jet.

High rev is usually caused by a too lean mixture, the seal will have caused that.

When you get the motor back from the builder, do not attempt to start it without a leak test being done.

Adjust the float level, clean the carb, and adjust the idle.

Get on BF tell your mods and what you have done and someone will put you right.

oh don't worry i should have explained better the shop he works at is high quality believe me they don't just do flippin lawnmowers and weed whips haha he and all the others working there are experienced professionals and work on atvs dirt bikes, utvs, road bikes, and much more haha so no i know he knows what he's doing.... and it's awful nice to have a relative in the family that does that because my family goes four-wheeling several times a year

yeah i'll be sure to tell him about the blown seal as well and please don't worry about being hard on me haha you weren't believe me....so that blown seal letting air into the motor could very well be the solution as to why mine revs so high? or why i've had to adjust the idle several times?
