removing bearings

great now he knows what one of them is called so he can call it by name when he cusses it out. I love you balancer bearing and the one beside you. heat the case up in the oven to the lowest temp and put some ice or dry ice(better but use thick gloves) on the bearing directly and it should come out. use gloves to hold the case too it will be hot. 200 deg or so should work.

thank you i will do that as soon as i clean the cases up before i put it in the oven. i read that i should have watched and looked which of the forks came from where in the trans. as well but i just kind of tore it apart. im no where close to putting it back together but how would i distinguish which one went where when i started putting back together

they have numbers on them.

i didn't relize that the first two posts were both you. i thought some dumb A was tellin you what they were called. my comment prob makes more sense now.

do you have any idea about this its my first rebuild

Problem with physical removal of the bearings isn't the removal... it's the reinstallation.

Ball bearings are highly polished on the inside races and designed to support the balls around and around about a million times BUT they are not designed for side loads... Pushing the bearings into the case without heat and cold can damage the new bearings before they ever get run the first time.

I've heard dry ice on the bearings and a propane torch on the case half before "dropping" the bearings in and lightly tapping to make sure they're set before the temperatures normalize.

Oh; Wal-mart supercenters usually carry dry-ice. It's in the service department in a special freezer. They sell it by the pound ;-)

What's the best way to clean the cases prior to heating them? Can you use water without damaging the bearings? (pressure washer)
