Alright I know I post a few more then needed of these "Is this worth it" threads. But I don't know how to gauge the worth of this because either it's not worth very much because it's not popular. Or it's really valuable because it's such a rare quad. I know the beauty and rarity of this quad so I can appreciate it, but is it an easy quad to sell?

For instance, if the clutch is the only thing wrong with it, and everything else is perfect, can I turn a profit? The lowest he said he would go is $1600. Thanks guys!

1987 Suzuki Lt500r QUADZILLA Fast, Nice, Cheap

there may be more wrong with it than just no gas, from where he says it starts and dies.

gotta check the swinger and axle bearings on these as they are known for destroying them.

and the guys an idiot, they dont do 100 stock, they do 81

that thing looks like it's lived a tough life

Just the guy I wanted in my thread, you had the amazing quadzilla build right?

I will bring mixed gas with me, he said he just hasn't made the effort to go get 93 gas and mix it, yet he has two blasters he is fixing. 8-| I will bring gas and put enough in for it to be able to start.

Good point, I will check all bearings and seals that I can possibly see.

That's still faster then I will ever need to go besides in a straight line. Shows how much this guy knows though.

How can you tell? Just general impression of the bike?

I bet I can talk him down with all the things like, lack of gas, doesn't go 100 like he said, make him think I know more then he does about it. He wanted me to throw him a number before I saw the ad. I sold him blaster parts and he asked if I wanted to buy a quad, turns out it's this one.

Idk if he has it re-jetted or anything, but they take 20:1 fuel-oil mix stock. might wanna find out what he mixes his at.
the frame has a few points where it normallly cracks, check the lower front-end by the A-Arms, there are 2 lower tubes and it likes to crack there or by the mounts, check the crankcase by the sprocket to see if the case saver bosses are broken off

check the case mount by the swingarm, they have been known to crack there. also grab the rear grab bar and push down and up hard on it, if you hear a snapping/popping sound you are going to need to replace the shock linkage bearings.

pull off the seat check the air filter, see if the carb says "43B00" or "43B01/43B02" if it says 43B00 you are going to wanna replace it, the 1987 carbs are known to be complete junk.

compression test it, you wanna be around 165psi

look around the engine for excessive RTV/liquid gasket, check the drain plug, etc..

make sure the rear brake caliper mount arm is there(look in my sig pic you will see the blue arm, and make sure the caliper mount is still attached to the axle carrier(it has free movement, so dont get super worried if it moves)

Just what I needed to know, thanks!

He said the bottom end was recently done by the previous owner because there was excess gasket stuff coming from where the case halfs meet, could this be bad because he put to much?

And if I get this mechanically sound all around, how much could it be worth?

Green coming your way for giving me good details!

the worth, like everything else, depends heavily on where you live. around here Zillas do not sell for under $2500ish

but some places i have seen clean ones for $900. also it depends on if the person really knows what they have lol

that thing looks like its been rode hard and put away wet, if it was me i would give him 1400-1500 for it just so i would have room to make expensive repairs if needed, its a crap shoot with a lot of stuff like this but the master carnz knows what hes talking about and once u ride the zilla u wont want to sell it, those things are monsters when running top notch!!

There are a couple good condition zilla's going for $2000-2200

Really good condition ones are going for around $3000.

Nothing lower priced except this one, probably because it has been beat up.

I bet I can get him talked down to about there. He doesn't seem to know what he has. I will probably end up doing a full restoration of this quad, nothing what carnz did, but mostly paint.

btw is the quadzilla faster then the banshee? Stock for stock?

Fast ass 2-stroke! but Ugly as hell! Listen to Carnz, check everything first, the more ya check the more ya may find wrong and that is a barganing chip, Myself he would get (if every part was there) and it runs decent $1000. Think about it, that thing is 25 years old and looks not to be taken cared of. You flash cash most people bite!

!

I always worry if I see an excess of sealant on the outside, just how much has squeezed out on the inside and is now floating around gumming up the works.

getting rid of a lt500 zilla and keeping 2 blasters...doesn't sound quite right to me. must be something major wrong.

Could be guys, I think it's worth a look. But I will use extreme caution and be extremely detailed in looking over it.

Don't give him what he is asking. That zilla is beat. Plus if you plan on doing a full resto, you will probably put 4-500 bucks into yellow and blue plastics.

My dad bought one last summer, in very good condition and a pile of extra parts including an extra frame, all for $1300.

That zilla is worth $800-$1000 IMO

Very good comparison there, you live sorta close to me. I think this would be the best price range to go off of. SO I should shoot for paying TOP, $1200, that's the absolute highest.

I didn't even see your first post, whoops. I think your on the money too slick, he needs to move these quads out soon. I will probably look it over, see if it is even worth buying, then "flash" some hundreds and see where it goes, he might be ignorant and not want to go below his $1600, but that's not my concern

Hell ya! Just looking out for ya!!!!!! I:I

I talked to him again today and figured out why he is selling it. He is my age, a teenager. When he got it he tried kick starting it and he almost broke his leg from the recoil compression thing that happens. He couldn't kick it for a while after that. He also does not know if he is capable of doing the clutch repairs on it, in his words "it could be the clutch, or could be the transmission, but it shifts through all the gears fine." I will check it out saturday but it sounds like he will not go down much farther then the $1500 range. He said "I will have to ask my dad if I can go any lower" ahhh great. Negotiating with a teenager still sucking on his mom's tits....perfect
