Port your jug yourself, OConnor Racing video

Gonna get camera back today, hope I can get pics up soon. Sorry dakota, I cant do that fancy computer stuff or I would. Great responses, keep them come'n. I love the fact that I can haul ass and say it's all me, I did that. While the guy next to you has spent big money and you kick his ass half the time. That feels GOOD!

there's definitely a feeling of satisfaction that can't be matched when you can say you did it all yourself

depends on how agressive of a port job you do....id say yea a pro can do a better job but if you really take your time and do what it how your sposed to i dont think youd really feel the difference....

I did the exaust and the lift ports like he said but I wish he did an intake video. Fortunately my first jug that came on my bike had a port job only on the intake so I am using it as a map to port my new jug. I really need to learn how to put pics on here I am a computer moron but a very fast learning two stroke lover!

Look at all you dudes go!!!!!!! A little goes a long way. Glad you're getting nice results. If you want to do the intake, clean it up like you did with the other ports, stay off the bridge other than cleaning and putting a taper on both sides and smooth out all the square corners. Gonna get dicey if you start opening things up. Lines need to be straight and the larger ports will need a generous radius.

Alright, here goes... it's gonna be a little long.

I had/have nothing to start this project with but figured "hey, what's a couple of bucks to do something REALLY cool like port your own cylinder" so here's what I bought for this:

DIE GRINDER KIT w FLEX SHAFT, WORKS w ALL DREMEL BITS - eBay (item 380245475974 end time Jun-24-10 22:24:14 PDT)

7pc Rotary Dremmel Tool Carbide Cutter Burr Set - eBay (item 120376856994 end time Jul-05-10 19:29:21 PDT)

249 Piece Rotary Tool Accessory Set

The burr set has not arrived yet so I have not messed with my exhaust port. So against ken's advice, I started with my transfer ports.

In my defense about not making great progress I also removed a radiator from a honda civic this afternoon. :-)

It looks like someone took an angle grinder to it...

Anyway, when the other burrs arrive I'm going to play with the exhaust port and maybe I'll get the other side polished up tomorrow.

What the harbor freight kit has is 1/8" bits. A round, straight without taper tip, or conical. The set of burrs I ordered has a rounded nose straight bit for the in betweens.

The ball burr digs in too much and the straight one cuts lines at the end of it. I need the in between to take out that middle man.

So far so good? Is that what you'd expect after some dremel'ing? How about the before pics? Doesn't that look like someone took an angle grinder to it before?

Finally got pics. first pic is of the intake. You can see I just cleaned everything up and put a taper on the bridge. I made it look like the nose of a bullet. Sleeve intake holes were about half the size of the jug ports, I opened them up to match the jug, that's all.

next I opened up the exhaust port to match the pipe flange. Engine port was sticking in about 1/8 inch all the way around, gained a 1/4 inch there. I did'nt have the patience that Ken had but I did polish the port to a dull shine.

next I raised the port 1mm. Do'nt be scared, it's not that hard. Get in there and do it.

The final thing I did was clean up the auxiliary ports. This pic did'nt come out, gonna try to post later. Do'nt change the port shape just match and clean everything up, I again put a bullet shape on auxiliary port dividing wall. YOUR DONE!!!

Very nice work indeed. And you say you can feel more power on the ass dyno. Who would have thought you could port your own cylinder and not screw it up. Amazing! Now watch what happens when you bolt that new head on.

I have a question(Probably answered in the vids I'm sure but I at my GF's I have satelite intertnet which is slow and they put a cap on your bandwidth so I will be later before I can view them) but when you change the shape and or size of the port where will it help, say if I want more bottom to mid, or mid to top how could I change the port shape/size to get that.

As I understand it you don't wanna raise ports to much if you want low, mid. it's more to do with the flow of air/fuel and velocity. But if you want a reving power mid, high then port hights are raised on even opened more depending on jug config.

In general if you raise the exhaust port you take from the bottom and put it on top. Imo what it took from the bottom it doubled and put on top. If bottom end is important to you the dont raise port. Do everything else but dont raise port. I haul ass everywhere I go and I love the change. Lots more mid-top performance. I think I'm gonna advance timing 4 degrees and see if that helps the bottom a little.

Hey Ken. I bolted that head on you redesigned for me. Holy sh!t, what a difference. It's like a different motor. I went to some sand dunes this weekend, (Pismo beach dunes, CA) to be exact. I was going up very steep dunes and I was hanging with the big bikes. I noticed I turned some heads after a couple runs. The little blaster has respect now. Thanks again.
