Us old farts must sound like a broken record harping onand on, raining on everybody's parade.
There is more of a reason than just dust to have an air filter on.
Pipe tuned 2 strokes have a wild air draw that makes carb tuning very hard to achieve for the engine designer. The restrictive exhaust and aircleaner purposely keep the engine from leaning out at max revs. Take the aircleaner off, especially in cold weather, and BOOM! Lean out and destruction.
If you want to take the aircleaner off you have to jet for it.
"It seemed OK" = expensive destruction
"I tested it, no leaks and found the right jetting" = safe to run
Cold weather means more oxygen in the air and danger of lean destruction.
Richen the jets up and check.
Blaaster is right about the caution of having the needle position.
We worry about blowing up at max revs and power by having too lean a main jet. It can happen in seconds.
An engine will still blow up at half or 3/4 throttle if the needle is not right.
It takes a bit longer but I can asure you it happens.
K&N is not the best choice for an off road machine unless you run a foam over filter.
K&N lets quite a bit of dirt by. I know, I have used many K&N filters.
A new foam filter, pre-oiled and ready to go is less then $15. That is a bargain.
Over heated or dust damaged pistons and bore are very expensive...
