Hello everyone, I bought a 2001 Blaster for my girlfriend a few weeks ago. I cleaned it all up and got it looking very nice for my lady. It has been running great while teaching her how to use the clutch out at our vineyard.

We took a trip down to Pismo Beach this past week and everything was running great on the Blaster but then all of a sudden the throttle would start revving out of control and we would have to kill it. I would pop the seat off and lower the idle using the knob located right under the gas tank area on top of the carb. I also set the fuel screw all the way in to richen it up and everything would be great for a few hours. Then she would come pull up next to me and once she grabbed the clutch the bike would rev out of control again until shut off with the kill switch.

Now that I have lowered the idle with the knob under the seat the engine will die if you apply just a hair of throttle. Its like the ignition just cuts completely out! If you go past that little point the engine runs great???

So if you have any advice could you please provide it. I looked in depth for air leaks and also ran the engine and sprayed starting fluid and some carb cleaner around the boots and could not find any air leaks. I appreciate the help in advance. Its a great little quad and she loves it.

sounds like an airleak, do your self a favor and look up how to make a leakdown tester, and how to do a leak down test. <<This is the only true way of determining if you have any airleaks. Also what kind of mods are you running, and whats the jetting at?

The quad is 100% stock. I looked this morning and the TORS is still on the quad and hooked up. The engine will run great 99% of the time and then all of a sudden out of no where the engine will rev to about 1/2 throttle and wont come down till I turn the tors knob CCW. Then the idle is under control again. But then later on the idle will be way to low to stay running so I slowly turn the Tors knob CW till the idle is stable. Will run great again for a while then out of the blue will rev again.

id do a leakdown test...but if messing with your TORS fixes it then its probly that...id remove the TORS regardless cause its just something that could go wrong in the future and drive you crazy...

i have a 1997 honda cr125 2 stroke and it does the exact same thing! but my problem is the carb, the needle likes to get dirty quite often so check on that, it may be the same thing happening to you.

You may also look into the possibility that your throttle cable sheath is broken. You said 99% of the time it's fine would the 1% perhaps be when someone was turning the handlebars hard to one side? If the sheath is seperated inside, when you turn the handlebars the cable seems "longer" which you make it "think" you're applying half throttle.

Something to look into.

question, do you put more gas into the blaster after it revved out and you adjusted the idle?
when the quad starts to run out of fuel, it will run lean sometimes.

Almost sounds like a bad throttle cable, could be hanging making it rev up, but if the tors is still connected it should prevent that. First step would be to disconnect the tors, then give your cable a good looking over. Then pull the carb apart and give it a very good cleaning, also if you have the oil injection removed make sure all the ports on the carb are blocked off, could be pulling in air from them. If that doesn't solve it, get a leak down tester and check for air leaks.

i have exactly the same problem. its not the cable an its not gettin stuck jus once it gets warm it revs extremely high. ill let you know if i ever get it fixed

Hopefully tomorrow morning when I get home from work I can put a few hours into tearing everything down and cleaning. Ill take the TORS off as well. Seems to me that it would not be an airleak as the engine can run for two hours straight with me hammering on it through the dunes and it never has a problem. Its something very intermittent and could very well be a bad throttle cable. Ill dig into it tomorrow and let you all know if I find anything.

Once I take the TORS off am I able to raise and lower the throttle if its too high or low?

when my 2 strokes run low on fuel they run extremely rich and start pouring gas from the overflow and i always have huge gas trails behind me. and make sure to check on your needle to make sure it isn't dirty, give the carb a good cleaning.

this is incorrect on so many levels. you can not make it running richer than the jetting allows. it can however runner leaner. when the gas level is right by the on position's filter, it will no get enough fuel into the fuel line and carb, causing it to run lean, not richer.

Ok so I just wanted to follow up on what the problem was. I finally was able to work on my GF's blaster today. I started by taking off the Tors unit and instantly noticed that the engine idled much more stable and reliable. I was able to lean out the low end again and then set the idle with the adjustment under the seat. Its extremely smooth and linear now. So I rode it around and thought everything was fixed. So I came back and when I pulled into the driveway I noticed it started revving again. I turned the steering straight so I could pull into my garage and the idle went back to normal. So I turned to the left again and it revved to about 1/2 power. I then grabbed the throttle cable and noticed that when ever I moved it the throttle would jump up. I tried zip tieing it down so the cable would not move and it would still rev if i moved the cable at all.

So I then went up to the thumb throttle and adjusted the throttle cable by about 1 turn on the loose side and everything went back to perfect. I can grab the throttle cable and move it anywhere and there is no change in RPM.

So if your having an extreme revving problem that only occurs every once in a while take a look at your throttle cable and make sure you have just a slight amount of play in your thumb throttle. It only takes a small amount. Not even enough to notice.

Thanks for the help blaster crew. Now on to the clutch and softer ride. :)
