hi, im looking at this current blaster on a craigslist ad, and i need help. first off the guy told me that when he first got it he rode it for 30 minutes then it started bogging down and shut off and wouldnt turn back on. he said he asked his friend whos good with engines to look at it. he told him that the blaster needs to have the top end rebuilt. he had it rebuilt and it would not start for him so he gave up on it. i need opinions on what it could be and how expensive it could end up to fix it :)

3 things:

1): What year is the Blaster in question?

2): How much is he asking for it?

3): Let's see some pics, or a link to the ad! It helps to see what you're dealing with. I:I

It sounds like the engine had (and may still have) an air leak, which would explain one fried top end and now the no-start condition. If the bike now has a fresh engine that won't start, I say get it IF everything else checks out and the price is right. You can do a leakdown test to find out what went wrong and fix the problem properly.

i know this isnt a legitimate way of measuring compression but he said the kick start is strong to kick over

I would meet up with him and do a compression test if the compression is good them i would get it its probably the TORS mine wouldn't start and when i disconnected the TORS and it started first kick

is it safe enough to think it is the TORS or can i be something else?

For that kind of price, IF the top end tests good, its safe to take a gamble. You could get your money back pretty quickly just by parting it out if you wound up with a POS.

It COULD be the TORS, or it could be a carburetor problem, bad gas, poor jetting, a seal hanging loose on the crankshaft on one side, or any other number of problems. It can be fixed, whatever it is. There's no telling until you start wrenching. Usually its nothing complicated.

so either way we can call this a win/win? anyways id really like a blaster as my regular quad so this will pay off in the long run? he said he never did any heat cycles because it never started

That makes sense, about the heat cycling. Just be sure you break it in once you figure out and fix the starting problem.

I'd say its a win/win situation.

Check the compression, check the overall condition (chain, a-arm bushings, etc...) and snatch it up if all looks OK. Even if it needs some work and normal wear stuff replaced, $ 450.00 is a good deal. Especially on an 03 + Blaster.

i know i want to hit up this deal. i know all of you guys here could help me with jetting and all that good stuff. thanks for all the help guys i really like this forum :)
