ok, so i just got off the horn with cpw. guy was wicked helpful! told me that most of the problems with these carbs (pwk) is that they came off a smaller displacement engine like cr80's kdx80's ktm 85's... and the jets in those are much smaller then what We require. Slicker hit the homerun! N427-26-JJH, thats the one bro! nd jat said the same thing. Awk, the dude said the same thing you did about the needles being Very important in these Keihins. i asked if he could cross the ktm number N5HG and he said thers no way, its ktm only and they dont like to give out their specs. i ordered 2 of the jjh needles in case another brother trys this and runs into the same headache i did. ill get them by saturday and ill post my results after i get em in and dialed with the CORRECT jet sizing. stay tuned...

Thanks to all of you that chimed in! thats the one thing about this forum man, not ONE GUY is stingy about his knowledge about these quads or anything they own/ride. everyone is here to help a brother out! thats what makes this forum work so well, The People!!! thanks again!!! more to come........
have some green, Everyone!
ok, it wont let me give it all today! but ill make sure everyone gets some!

NICE! That guy at CWP -JIM i think is his name, knows PWK series very well!

i think youre right, Jim was his name. the minute i told him i had the wot bog he asked, ' still got the factory ktm needle in it?' i told him the number and thats when he told me about the needle issues with the swap.

He helped me with my 30 oko and the air stryker!

May be a little late, but some KTM info just jumped onto my screen, which gives detailed jetting and numbers.

I could not load all of the pages due to my slow connection, but I thing the info would have been usefull.

Yup, same stuff I saw. 2010 ktm 85sx Keihin pwk 28mm 118 main, 45 pilot and that dad gum needle from HELL, n5hg. That's how I found out all I did about the size jetting that needle works with. Jim said the same thing I thought; the needle taper and length is for a much smaller main jet for smaller displacement engines. In other, non mechanically inclined speak, it's too bloody narrow allowing too much gas. And you're never too late blaaster, you're actually something like 23 hrs ahead of me. Lol

23 hrs ahead, Gee if thats the case my dust will have settled before you get there.

It's a shame it dont work that way.

mjgnslngr, New guy here... Did that needle fix your issue? I'll be trying a 28mm pwk soon, and would also like to know where to start. Mine has porting and head mods. I think the needle your going to use will work for me too. Thanks,Joe

ok, lets start from somewhere near the beginning. the needle from cpw came today, a 2 week wait for customs! nice. anyway, i replaced the ktm needle n5hg with the keihin 427-28-jjh. 28 bucks buy the way. they wacked me 19 just for shipping! wow. i digress... at last attempt with the ktm needle i was at a 120 main jet 45 pilot and Still fouling plugs! after i put the jjh needle in, i started my jetting as follows needle middle, 155 main, 45 pilot (i didnt change the pilot cause it idles fine. the main was too rich. end result again really low in my opinion, 135 main, needle on second clip down from top (lean) and it still has a slight wot bog!!! no, i didnt plug chop, no sense, i know its still rich. i can see it in the plugs. this is with airbox attached no lid. gonna go to my local shop tomorrow and see about a 132-130 and see where that gets me. any advice as always is Very Much Appreciated!!! talk away gentlemen n ladies, im all ears.....

well i have uni filter(clamp on with k&n outerwears and velocity tube
dyno port exhaust
boyseen reeds
oconnor head mods and double top secret internals work
not exactly sure because i havent had it apart in awhile but...
52- 55 pilot and 162 -165 main jjh needle on middle setting
took me for godamnnned evr to get it right but i do have a large selection of jets for it cause my guy costs 2 bucks a pop unlike 8 at other places around
i think your problem is te same as i had when i was jetting and couldnt get it
i had to rebuild my stator plate with all new coils . and i got a new cdi box while i was ordering. go to this guy for the electrics he is fast cheap and knowledgable
Rick's Motorsport Electrics

my suggestion would be to get out the old electrical volt and ohm meters and check everything. also a good cheap fix if your coil wire is long enough is to cut 1/2 inch or so off and rethread the boot into the wire . but check all the connections and coils for specs and report back with what you got

ok, now theres a new spin on it. why would you suspect my coil output? the previous stock 26mm had good plug chops with the fmf and a 280 main, 32.5 pilot and needle(stock) in the middle. if my coil or stator wasnt up to par, wouldnt it have been apparent in the original set-up? im just trying to understand the variables....thanks for the help

i know im reaching deep for that conclusion, but, when i was trying to get mine jeted it wanted leaner and leaner like yours. thought maybe cause i had put a biger carb it had less air velocity therefor needing les fuel. then i finally got it good and went for a ride and kept fouling plugs till i finally had to be towed out of the woods after i used 5 plugs to there limit.
tested everything and replaced the coils and when i got it all soldered back together it was too lean.
it only takes an hour or so to eficiently test all the coils.

im assuming if you swap the stock carb back on it runs fine no issues at all?

heres another option for you. come on down to my area and ill swap my carb on your bike and try it. maybe you got a defunct carb. i had bought a keihin carb before i got the pwk and it was fubar and wouldnt tune for me.
your way up north right?
what jets do you have ? i have a bunch of them in the 40 -60 range pilots and 140 - 175 mains for keihins.
