Hi all!
Tonight I bought a YZ 465 engine that runs/looks good with no leaks for $100

The guy responded to one of my Craigs list want adds and told me he had wrecked his bike and still ran. I wanted to hear it run, so I went over and the thing ran great! So he agreed to take $100 for it but I didn't want the bike (no more room here), so he agreed and we pulled the motor and all the electronics out and I brought it home. He's gonna scrap the frame.

This motor looks exactly like the blastys motor!

I am going to throw it in sometime after Christmas.

Any precautions or anything I should be aware of when making the swap?

Thanks Buds!

this sounds challenging, the engine should have alot more mass, which makes it difficult, my suggestion, is to avoid frame changes as much as you can, you may end up making your own pipe, if im correct, this current one should be in the way

One sugestion, be careful with that extra power, the stock engine is scary enough on the blasters little frame! :)

good luck!

Do those engines have electric start, that would wicked!

Oh you bet, I'll take it easy. Till I get used to it that is!

No elec start looks just like the blaster 200 motor.
besides, we don't need no stinkin $50 battery! That's the bonus to me!
Thanks!!

You may want to strengthen the frame. I think they call it gusseting but I`m not sure. Like hickskater said, you`ll want a longer swingarm. You`ll love it when you get it done though. good luck with it.

sweet deal, if you get it to work in the blaster that would be sweet, i think you mite want to get the crankshaft balance cause its got a good amount of vibration that would prolly kill the blaster frame in no time..

all i kno is if it works.... its gonna be a monster!! that blasty is gonna haul like no other.. unless i get my cr480 motor and drop that into my blasty... is this a challenge??? best of luck getting it to work.

That's a good motor. It's basically an 80' IT425 with a 7mm stroker kit on it.
If you really want to test the frame (from vibes) a YZ490 top end bolts right up.
Here's a picture of my YZ465 :)

Thanks guys! that's some really helpful info! I haven't had any time to mess with yet but really it looks like it will bolt right into the frame. I was thinking I'll probably wind up doing something with the pipe to get it to mount up.

I hadn't put any thought into a longer swing arm or damage from vibration but it sounds like that can be worked out. I will keep you updated.

Why should I get a longer swing arm? Is it because with the stock swing arm the blaster will about flip every time I nail it? That wouldn't be my idea of fun, lol.
I am really looking forward to checking the top speed after the swap.
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond. Have a Merry Christmas!

gussetting is just welding extra chunks of metal at all the joints to strengthen them. and yeah, i'd lengthen the swinger to keep from flipping when you nail it. i need a longer one with my setup.... if i nail it out of a corner in like 2nd and she grabs it stands right up on me, so your definately going to want one.

get a good keihin carb a strong igntion and the exhaust choice will make or break the performance on that project

The torque of that motor will raise the front end at will in the top gears too with the stock swinger. The fun of that lasts about a week and then you realise you can't go fast with the front wheels to the sky all the time lol.

yea no doubt, paulie what does that beast do speed wise?
It's not too much faster top speed cause I'm running stock gearing on 20"s but it gets to that speed ALOT quicker!

This is good advice. I've seen alot of these type of projects fail because the combo just isn't right- and it's mostly pipe related. You WILL need a custom pipe. No Blaster type pipe will work.

Hey Paulie , how much does it cost to have a custom pipe made?

Well my trail pipe is an DG aftermarket pipe for a YZ400. It cost about $250 for the new pipe + the re-welding that needed to be done to make it fit.
The FTZ drag pipe was $330 and $50 of that was for the optional silencer.

+1 on the pipe as Paul mentioned. Mine is a 490 and i tried a blaster pipe. It works, but not very well. Took it out yesterday and I could out run a Z-400 and stay with a raptor 660. FTZ just got a different pipe builder. I just got off the phone with them and he said he might be able to do the pipe next month. His new guy needs some time fabricating other pipes first. So I'm gonna wait.

As far as it "bolting right in" it is close but close doesn't work. You will have to make all the motor mounts. One thing i was surprised with was rear transmission mount that pins in between the swing arm. The blaster motor and the 490 were the same diameter. I did have to cut down the swing arm to get it to go around the transmission. All in all, it wasn't that hard. Took one weekend to mount the motor.

I have done this. Paul Leary worked with power prows to build the pipe. you will need to make new front motor mounts, a head stay and trim the inside of the swingarm and bushings. it will vibrate like hell. if you heat the kickstarter with a torch you can bend it around to work, but you WILL need to eat your wheaties to start it. if th motor is stock you will want to find one of the old school porting shops to recut the head or i will ping. keep your eye out for an IT bottom end as it has 5 speeds instead of 4
