How Light is Your Flywheel? *PICS*

DAAAYYUMMMM tater that thing looks liiight, with just milling mine is quite noticeably lighter but that one looks AWESOME. i hope you get to bring it up here for some 1/8 mile action :o :o I:I
 
here some anwers:

it's a hpi ignition costs 250 euro like 325 dollar

on a dyno it ads 4-5 hp

gas reaction is incredible

it's a kit made for the blaster only you have to make a stator plate it's not included
 
see guys lightened flywheels are not just for drag racing. :p

that is a very purdy flywheel, and i'm sure it does what you need it to do on the track you run, but................

just incase any of you haven't investigated lightened versus weighted flywheels further, heres the other side of the coin, and it seems to me that a lighter, or heavier flywheel is a matter of preference and track conditions, not just holy sh*t....listen how fast my bike revs now, but is it really making you faster overall, not if your just spinning your wheels and not putting the power to the ground ??????

I read the article Awk.
It's still a what your using it for thing and then personal preference.
Drag racing lighter is always better. Getting through the revs is the name of the game and theres no corners to go through.
Serious draggers use the clutch off the line and that's it (sometimes going into the top gear also).
Flat tracking also. Yes there are turns but your still on the gas and drifting.
MX/Trails well that's the personal preference thing but I will give an example of how the factory feels.
My 400 came in 2 flavors in 79' the IT400 (woods bike) and the YZ400 (MX).
The factory flywheels on the 2 are different the YZ's is several oz's lighter.

Everybody's engine feels a little different, but I wouldn't mind taking out like 3 or so oz out of the Blaster flywheel on the edge of it. To me, the flywheel is excessively heavy as it is already....alot because it's a low compression ratio single cylinder engine from the factory, but also an entry level quad that's more user friendly for putting around.

Let's just say I'm not usually putting around. I:I I ride mostly trails, but it would be nice to get a bit back in revs to get that crispness back that you lose from the bottom end torque loss in modifying the engine from the stock.

Well you could............but like you said.......it has to be balanced perfectly. :D Not to mention, I wouldn't trust small flywheels like this by drilling holes in them without taking some of the mass off the edges, since you have basically weakened the structural stability of the flywheel at speed but still have the same reciprocating mass due to inertia on the edges of the flywheel.

Excellent article AWK08! I could not agree more.
I can feel that light flywheel effect with the KTM/Blaster motocross engine.
A snap of the throttle just produces wheelspin, not traction and acceleration.

Another place they lose it is on hillclimbs. Often when losing power on a
hillclimb you can feather the clutch, gain rpm into the powerband and make
enough power to finish the hill. A heavy flywheel gives the momentum and
engine control to do this. A light flywheel makes this difficult, over-reving,
and not so effective due to lack of flywheel momentum.

Light flywheels are for drag racing.

I liked the "grasshopper" reference.
Some of us are old enough to have seen it first time around!

I don't like to think I am old... Just, experienced!

Yeah, I remember the Munsters too! One of my favourites.
I had a "Hermin" that talked when you pulled a string.
Tore him apart years later (after I out-grew him) to discover the sound came from a tiny plastic record disk.

At the time I lived in a more remote part of the country, so our TV programing was a bit off.
Luckily my father moonlighted as a TV repairman and always had a couple colour TVs around when colour started to come around.
Munsters wasn't one of those shows.

Back onto flywheels, once shaved 10 lbs from mainly the outside of a Mustang 289 flywheel.
Combined with wayyyy too much cam, it made a foul driving car.
Would hardly idle, and hard to pull away. Had a powerband like an 80cc MXer!

im going to speak for everyone here and say why dont you think outside of "awks wild, super rocky, break parts off your blaster box" and stop trying to prove to everyone that a lightened flywheel is a bad mod?

ill ask you this.. for the second time awk have you ever tried a lightened flywheel on your bike?

the answer is no and this is how people go faster by trying new things and seeing what works, not by tellin someone no when you have never even tried what you are putting down

I have to agree. If I get around to it, I'm lightening mine, but not much....3-4oz probably. I just want a little bit more zip. Lack of traction is due to tires, frame geometry, and quite frankly.......just being a high revving 2 stroke engine. If you are worried about tire spinning, you shouldn't haven gotten a 2 stroke in the first place. The Blaster has quite a heavy flywheel from the factory which might be fine for some, but I'd rather bypass some of the low end bog you get from a modded engine and exhaust and skip right to the power and have the tractability to quickly and decisively control the power where you want it whether it be shifting up or downshifting.

Holy sh*t? 10lbs.........dude that's like half the flywheel weight......no wonder it ran like sh*t.
