Hay all, how’s it going. New to the forum, not new to riding, but new-ish to ATVs. I have a few smaller quads for the family but I started looking for something a little bigger. I found a Blaster for what I think is a good price, (yes believe it or not the blaster is bigger than everything else I have right now) and just had a quick question. I have read a few posts that everyone says the blaster is a pretty good trail ride which is something I am looking for. The blaster I am looking at right now is in pieces and if I understand the gentleman correctly I can basically pick the parts I want to put it together with... My question is, I am 5'6" 200lbs (yes I am a little chunky) and am currently trail riding with the family. I have no intentions of going to the dunes. Of the parts in the pile there is a stock swing arm and what is claimed to be a 2" extended swing arm. Which would be better for trail riding? I would assume the stock keeping things short and giving the blaster a tighter turn.

And in case you are wondering it is $300 for one ride or he said I could have everything for $500 (2 frames, 2 swing arms, 2 sets of front rims, not sure what else is there I am going tomorrow to take a look). I am of course going to offer a little less for the whole pile of parts so we will see what happens.

Thanks in advance.
Mike.

Take the whole pile for a low offer. Spares are good.

Until you make more hp you do not need the extended swingarm.
It will limit your ability to loft the front end, lessen traction and put more weight on the front.

The 2" or even my son's 3+inch extension really are not noticeable for turning, but are for traction and ability to loft the front wheels on slippery ground.

First time out it is a fair amount of work to put one back together and there WILL be parts missing. Ebay is your friend.

Welcome on board.

Perhaps I will make him an offer then on the entire pile-o-parts and just sell what isn’t needed to re-coupe some of the cost of buying this project...:p I have been riding off and on for well over 20 years and have been piecing vehicles together for at least that long, so I don’t expect everything to be there. If I keep this ride it would be cook to squeeze in a 250 4 stroke just to keep things torquey... I like torque. I:I But for now I think a stock ride with a few of the free/more in-expensive mods would be sufficient. Thanks for the info on the swing arm BTW, that what I was looking for.

hey welcome,. and make sure you dont catch the mod bug, ive had my quad for maybe two weeks, and its already hitting me.

noo! please dont throw a fourstroker in there! youll be happy with the blaster as long as its maintained properly and well taken care of!

p.s. welcome.to the forum!

Are you kidding... There isn’t a single vehicle I own that hasn’t had the hood up (figuratively speaking) within hours of me owning it trying to figure out what I can do to make it faster.;)

you can do some mods to give you better bottem end toque....

Yeah, he is right.
My son and I built a Blaster engine with the cylinder lowered by removing the basegasket and using a reshaped cylinder head to vastly improve the torque of the engine. There is a thread about it somewhere here. It was a lower reving engine, which should help reliability and had awesome low rpm grunt on hills. It gave up some top speed and revs but would be pretty much the equal of a 250 4 stroke (he had a TRX250 at one point).

My Blaster has a 250 motocross engine in it. The only mod is a lengthened pipe that trades off peak rpm for torque. A bit weak off idle, it has a very strong mid-range. This was a bit of a mistake really. It was a huge amount of work to swap motors and headaches with gearing mismatches, rads, pipes, alignments etc. I recommend a swap as a last resort. The Blaster motor is really a fine motor and easily modified for more power, or torque.

The beauty of these machines is SIMPLE and LIGHT (cheap fits in there too).
If you do something to mess this up, you are not getting what a Blaster is about. For me it is the closest quad to the enduro bikes I love. A 4 stroke messes up this formula, as does liquid cooling really. I moved from a 660 Raptor to a Blaster with no regrets.

Welcome! I'd pick the whole pile up, make offer, let him know you have no way of knowing if every part is there so it will cost you money to have missing items shipped, blah blah blah!

Then after your done building it, and riding it, tear it apart again, put a +3 stroked crank in, get some head work, porting to match the +3 larger carb and make or buy aftermarket air box to help it breathe, Get a good pipe and you will have your torquey, fast ass trail blasty! that will smoke the 250 4pokes out of the water!

Well... Officially made the wife mad at me. Picked up the entire pile for $350. Once I have a chance to go through all the parts and figure out what is what I will more than likely have some parts up for sale/trade so I can get what I need to put this beast back on the trail. I will try and get some pictures up tonight when I have a chance to snap a few.

Wahoo! All right Mike!
Incidentally that is what I paid for my rolling chassis. $300 for the quad with a no compression motor and about $50 in gas to go get it. Papers are important here and it came with papers. I only got one pile-o-Blaster parts, Mike.

My son just put a Blaster-ina-box together a couple of weeks ago for a friend.
Warn everyone to be prepared for some cussin'!
Took him 5 evenings total I believe. Had to rob some parts from our pile.

Good luck! Good quad to work with.

welcome to the forum!!!! let's see some pics of the pile.

and you'll like these. good bikes to tinker with and fairly inexpensive.

and btw, i started out thinking that i wanted a mildly modded bike....that didn't last long lol
