Hey guys, i am in the market for a quad bike so i can go riding with a few mates. i was originally looking at getting a yamaha raptor, but they're too expensive and i dont like the 4-stroke. Currently for the last couple months i have been looking at a yamaha banshee 350. You can get some affordable used ones around here for around 3-5K. Just before i stumbled upon the Yamaha Blaster 200cc and found out you can ge some for about 1-2K. I am really interested in the Blasters now but dont know much about them. Will they be able to keep up with my mates 150cc bike and my mates honda 250? I dont want to be lagging behind. What should i look for in my purchase? Are they a good bike, reliable, fast etc.? I'm a first time rider, so im guessing a lower cc bike such as the blaster would be better?

cheers guys

Sorry we don't speak to Australians! I'm from South Africa and is still mad at the world for messing up the worldcup in NZL!

Just joking! Blaster are great bikes! and beat the pants of most 4-stroke bike up to 350 and even the ltz400's

The blaster will have no problem with either of them! Put a good pipe (toomey) and port the cylinder a bit, bigger carb, you leave them in the dust!

haha yeh it was a great game, personally i didnt think we had a chance ;)

So if i get my blaster, what are some of the first mods/things i should do to it to make it run better and faster? Im a complete noob at bikes so go easy on me :)

Change the tranny(crankcase) fluid. Fresh gas, clean the carb(dissassemble it first), , check the jetting write down what is in there now for reference, new plug. Cut holes on stock air box- rejet!

Engine Mods-aftermarket full exhaust, larger carb, when time for top end rebuild-Port/match the top end, possible stroker crank! Aluminum air box!

Suspension mods- Some dual/tripple rate shocks are awesome, 400ex rear shock-front and rear Hydro disk brakes if not already there. 03+ will have them already!

Just to name a few....

I'd recommend a blaster. It's a great entry-level quad and you can do heap of mods yourself for not much money. Knock on wood, my blaster has also been extremely reliable.

See my signature for all the mods I've done on the cheap.

Are your boys riding on 2 or 4 wheels? If they're riding on 2, you'll be hard pressed to keep up with them no matter what quad you're riding.

Blasters are one hell of a fun bike, my boy has one and uses it for MX.

Mods don't cost much and a few dollars will make the bike fly and handle well.

oh great anothe aussie!!! :) thats good someone to banter with, Blaaster is not a ball game chap so he is no fun on that side...(JOKING:) )

Go for the blaster, you have just found the biggest support network you will ever need for all your questions and concerns.

Solid bikes, well built, reliable, fast, cheap, simple. bang for buck like no other and above all....fun...no high and mighty attitude, it is what it is and its good at it.

Some basic suspension mods, honda 400ex rear shock, spacers, wider axle, and some basic to not so basic engine mods will see you hanging on for dear life.

My advice, ride it till you feel confident then look at some mods...

Have to second almost everything said. The benefit of the blaster is they virtually stayed unchanged for 20 years so parts are plentiful and can swap year to year. Here is the tricky thing though, the only years of blaster are that are different are the 03-06, but they are also, if possible, the one you want to buy. All older parts will work with them except the axle setup, hood, and brakes ... the brakes areo what makes them better ... hydraulic brakes ... not mechanical/drum brakes. It is however an upgrade that can be made through members here (AWK08). Anyway, parts are readily available and they are cheap and easy to work on where the banshee 350 is double everything so much more expensivewhen things go wrong.

I could go on and on but basically a blaster can be built to do anything you would want, it is a bulletproof air cooled simple two stroke setup. The dimensions are small but it makes it fun to ride due to the light weight. I would highly suggest you get one and save that extra money for some upgrades...

thanks for all the tips guys. Just need a semi decent bike to be reliable and keep up with my mates. Just need to find one now!
