getting a ltz tomorrow

I am anyways very wary when I get something given to me to fix, if the owner says it just broke.

What did they do wrong to make it break, what did they force, what did they do wrong.

What else have they done that caused the breakage, I always look a lot deeper into the problem so that when I replace the broken part, I do not get a nasty surprise.
I know the person that broke it and he knows a lot about working on bikes and knows a whol lot more than I do about rebuilding a 4 stroke im pretty sure he dropped the cam and broke the grar

I sined up to a z400 fourm and theres a guy fairly close to me he said he would help me time it and look it over for me so im gonna see if I can take it over there this weekend and get him to look it over and re shim the valves

It is mainly common sense working on any engine, understanding what the components do.

Take notice of how you take it apart, replace the parts adhering to tensions specified.

Every moving part must be lubricated prior to assembly.

If you are unfamiliar with the engine a manual is a must!

make sure to lap in the new valve when you get it otherwise it will never seat correctly and leak. the other two issues are easy. also, if your pulling the heat to replace the valve, replace all the valve seals and lap all the valves. that will tighten up the top end and you lessen the chances of oil burn.

the valve has gotten dirt in it and worn it down and we couldent get the smallest feeler gauge we had in between the cam and the valve cap he told me he had she same problem with his and the valve stays open a lil all of the time

That would be the last place dirt would "stop" lol. Velocities are highest there of any point of the intake or exhaust tracts. Maybe carbon. Better hope the seats aren't worn out.
You should consider doing a complete valve job while it's apart.

os the z400s the valves ate softer than the seats and they have a problem with them doing this
