I have a 2000 blaster w/k&n filter and outerwear with lid removed. Previous owner apparently loved riding in the sand - there is sand everywhere. I have found sand getting under the k&n filter, and want to protect the engine. Is there a way to better seal the bottom of the filter? Does anyone run a k&n on the carb, ditching the airbox? any other ideas?

You can run a filter off the carb. If you go k+n you need to run a tube extending it 4" away from the carb or the "pulses" will bounce off the back of the filter and disrupt engine performance.

I'd run a foam filter off the back of the carb. Like a uni or something. But if you ride in alot of mud its best to keep the airbox or buy a better airbox.

I run the uni foam clamp on filter and no dirt will get past it and you will get better air flow. This means if you do go to a clamp on chances are you will have to rejet.

ya No-Toil you can buy this stuff that the filter seals to that ruber flange on the bottom so you wont have to buy a new filter... worth a shot

I used this stuff I get at work when I ran a K&N its called valve lube Its a real thick grease that seems to work well. You may be able to use something like vasoline though I think that should work.

I may try that. I just don't want sand/dirt destroying my new top end.

Grease the air box and put a big ol bead of silicone on the bottom of the filter, that'll keep the sand out and you can get it back out to clean it.
I don't run an air box on my Blaster, sawed it out with the saw on my swiss army knife! got a BIG K&N in there now!
The foam filters are cheaper because they sell more of them because you cant get sand out of them! so you have to buy a new one!
