So I discover the other day that my K&N filter is seriously dirty with impacted mud and dust so my Blaster is running so rich that the plugs are wet and in a short time barely runs at all. (I'd been having my son clean it) It actually looked good on the surface but we'd just been spraying it with cleaner and hosing it off, but I finally read the instructions on the K&N cleaner and it says soak so I did that too. Anyway, I finally get the damn thing really clean and dry (what do you know you can actually see through it) and oil it up. Put it in and the damn thing won't run. Acted just like it was plugged solid. WTF? Thinking maybe I just put on too much oil, I cleaned it again and sprayed lightly with K&N oil. Sumbitch won't run, take off the filter, runs fine. Whatthehell?
Cleaned again and put on without oil, runs ok. So then I get the bright idea to try a different filter oil. Actually I've been using this other oil for months, this was the first time I actually used true K&N oil. Whadyaknow, it runs fine with the other oil. So I start comparing this filter to the K&N out of my Raptor 660. Not only can I see light through the K&N from the Raptor but it also has lots of tiny holes. The filter out of the Blaster has no holes, just solid mesh. Hmmm. At this point I notice that the Blaster's filter doen't say K&N on it, it just looks like one and therefore must be a Vito's or one of those $13 ones from eBay. I also compared the viscosity of the K&N oil to the other generic oil, the K&N is much thicker.
Obvious conclusion: You can't use K&N filter oil on a non-K&N filter.
So, has anyone else had this problem with K&N vs other oil?
Also, do you think I damaged the filter, maybe making the fabric inside the steel mesh "fluffier" by using a toothbrush to clean off the mud down in the pleats, somehow changing the way it holds oil?
I know this is kind of a long post, but I lost some more hair last night....
