Clutch Trouble PLEASE HELP!!!

okay first of all this isn't about my blaster.

My friend put oil in his gearbox that wasn't marked that it had friction modifiers, but it did because as soon as he had that oil in for awhile his clutch started slipping. so we changed to oil that we knew that had no modifiers. that didn't fix the slipping. He took the clutch cover off and noticed that the bolts looked like they were backed out some. He proceeded to tighten them in a star pattern till they felt snug then stopped so he wouldn't bust one off..... well we all know what happened. One snapped off about a 1/4 inch inside the center hub. Also his fibers look fine they are just soaked with the bad oil.

So here are my questions:

1. What are our options to get the bolt out, use as is, something else... idk?

2. How can we get the old oil out of the fibers so we can at least try to use them

Using an easyout shouldnt be too bad to remove the broken bolt from the basket. In fact you could even possibly get a small file in there and file a straight divet in it and then use a screwdriver to spin it out. Theres no load on the threads, they oughtta spin right out now the bolt is actually broken.

As for the clutch, I wouldnt soak it in anything other than some of the oil you actually plan on using in the quad. I honestly dont think the oil is whats making the clutch slip. For the price of a new clutch (less than 40 dollars plus shipping from rockymountainatv.com) you might just consider replacing the clutch while youre going to be in there. Cause if you go through all this work to take the case apart and you spend money on fluid, and your time etc, you still might have to do it all again if yours still slips.

40 dollars to me is worth piece of mind. I have good experience with the Tusk HD clutch kit. It comes with HD springs, you just use 3 of them (3 stockers, 3 HD springs - its stiffer and sportier feeling, it has good grab, but it isnt too stiff to hurt your hand).

And of course dont forget to buy another bolt from Yamaha to replace the one that was broken. Also if you are going to replace the clutch, you will also need to buy a new lockwasher for underneath the main bolt that holds the basket in. Its technically not reusable. For the 3 or 4 bucks they cost, I wouldnt reuse one and take the chance. **EDIT** you only need this lockwasher if you are taking the clutch basket out of the case. If youre only replacing discs you dont need to.

but, i'd try cleaning the fiber discs with some brake cleaner, or maybe even soak them in some kerosene or gas, let them drain and dry, then the proper oil or atf ???? they're already fuk'd what could it hurt ????

how soft are these bolts, could we hammer a screwdriver into the center of the bolt to spin it out? or won't it work?

don't do the hammer thing, you'll mess up the aluminum around it before you do the bolt itself.

Use a dremel and put a notch in it as suggested.also just replace the clutch.you could try and use brakleen but why?for 40 bucks you get a new clutch.next time only use quality oils.

ok either you guys don't realize that it is broken off like a quarter inch inside the inner hub or that the only thing that would fit in that hole would be a tiny precision screwdriver. no dremels or files are getting in there

If it's not a blind hole, get a sharp dill bit started in the center of the broken bolt then push hard. The cutting action will probably grab the bolt and push it out the other side. Better off getting new plates.

One time I did exactly what you did, but on a car.

I overtightened a pressure plate bolt. It broke the bolt off in the flywheel. I figured Id be drilling and using easyouts, but what I did was put the drill bit on the bolt and pushed hard, and used reverse and it spun that thing right out. You can try that too.

Worst case, Im sure you can find someone on here with a clutch basket layin around. Ken here might even have one. Another worst case is, you could take your basket off and take it into a machine shop and they can extract it for cheap if you cant get it out.

ya just get a small drill bit and drill it out.

as for the fibers, are they still usable. like the fiber part is still meaty?
if so, just clean them with brake cleaner and reoil them.

so run a drill bit in, then put the drill in reverse and it should spin out the bolt?

it may do that, but if that doesn't work, you can pull the center nut off, pull that inner hub out, and then just run the drillbit into it and push it out the other side. that's what i ended up doing on mine....

when we were trying to drill it to pull it out we just ended drilling enough of whats left of the bolt out that we could get a new bolt in far enough. cleaned the fibers with brakekleen but until he gets the new bolts we won't know if it worked. rep has been given for the people who said drill it

I would've got new clutch and inner hub plus all new Yamaha Bolts. Odds are that you will break another bolt...

these bolts are very small and delicate, they break sometimes,


in other words sh!t happens lol


i ended up running a tap down the threads of all of mine to clean it up and got all new bolts from yamaha for it

sry man was annoyed about something else but my motto would probably be if it ain't broke don't fix it. anytime i try to fix something that isn't broke, i end up breaking it

Hey If ya need a set of clutch plates to use, I have 2 spare set's, I can give one up I even have an extra bolt to throw in, all ya have to do is meet me on RT 30 say Irwin?? By the turnpike?
