clutch engagement problem

so i got my hunk o crap to start, idle etc.
today i get the rest of my clutch assembly together and procede to put in oil and new crank gasket..

starts up in a two kicks..im excited at this point

grab the clutch lever, shift into first. fail. bucks and stalls.
hmm my clutch lever is really sloppy/loose, let me try pulling it by hand

try that: same outcome..

what could be the problem?

ok look from the right side of the quad and see it the point on ur lever that goes into the case is point at the line on the top of the bottom end.you can see it from the right side of the quad.if not then you have to adjust it by the rod on the pressure plate

i did both, adjusted the pushpin lever on the stator side, and tightened the pressure plate, both a fail. im gonna sell this thing lol i ran out of patience

you gotta do the push rod inside the clutch basket with the cable disconnected from the hand lever, your makin it sound like your adjusting them seperately, this is all one adjustment, disconnect the cable at lever, loosen the rod, make sure the pointer is turned to the mark on the case, then adjust the rod till it just barely touches, then reconnect at the lever and take up slack, too many guys are using the cable as an adjustment, it's not for that, it's just for taking up stretched cable slack

i know what your saying, the clutch is acting as if its not attached at all. i even tried pulling it by hand and it still just bucks and stalls. doesnt make sense? i just ordered a new push pin, clutch cable and a few other things..if it all doesnt solve the problem im def selling this

it sounds like it could be a few things, maybe you have the washers flipped? the one that goes behind the basket could be the wrong thickness, (we need a measurement done so we know) if the basket has notches wore in them from holeshot abuse the plates will hang up and the clutch will not function correctly, and when I do the adjustment I make sure the ball is in and with the cable disconnected I push it with my thumb and adjust the screw so it lines up perfectly while I'm putting pressure on the actuator with my thumb, and then hold the screw while I tighten the nut, is your basket isn't new file down any notches you have

I had exactly the same problem, it was the pushrod adjustment that was wrong... The hex bolt was not in place.. It´s and easy fix, you do have to drain oil though.. It ONLY an adjustment problem.. took me a few tries before i figured out the how-to-do with the clutch internal adjustment..

it is also possible that the ball is welded to the shaft, next time you pull the case to adjust it, unscrew the rod and pull it the whole way out, watch the ball doesnt roll out and dissappear, but if it's stuck to the end of the rod, gonna need new, just sumthin else to look for, if doing the adjustment properly doesnt help, and thats after ruling out the other important things already mentioned above, assembled properly etc......

yea i just ordereed a new pushrod bc through the thing i stripped it like a dick..
so i have a clutch cable, pushrod and hardware..if the things mentioned above dont work i might just sell it to get it out of my hair. but thanks for all your help i appreciate it guys

ok so i got the new pushpin in and the new clutch cable, still getting the same results, its as if the clutch is not even hooked up, just pops into gear..anyone ?????
i dont feel like paying this guy $100 to find out it was something i could have done on my own

I would purchase a clutch actuator arm and push rod 1 put those in a new ball and the last push rod and it will work if not, I'm not sayin

the clutch hub was too tight against the basket, so everytime i went to engage, it wouldnt do anytihng it would still be part of the motor...my friend figured it out while we starred at it for about 2 hours lol. but yeah its good now
