so i just rebuilt my engine, +3 stroker, .020 over, wiseco piston, let flotek have their way with the cylinder and head, and a 34mm carb. eventually i plan on making a custom aluminum airbox but just for winter as long as i stay out of water i should be safe with just a filter clamped directly on the quad right? would a filter from a local auto parts store work (ex spectre)? sorry im a noob with modifications but thanks to you guys im learning I:I

thanks whitty, never even thought of that but shes garage kept so i dont think il have an issue with that

blasterdude, i plan on getting an airbox funds are just a bit low at the moment and its been undergoing major heart surgery for months now i wanna ride it!

still anyone know if a simple spectre filter will suffice?

my buddy ran a AEM filter on his warrior and it worked fine but it was in place of his OEM filter in the airbox. i run a pod filter with about 10" of 2.5" exhaust pipe havnet had too much problem dialing it in with my 34mm carb. i believe the "velosity tube" i put on helped a ton in the bottom end.

Yeap a 3-5" velocity tube is the way to go. It makes the difference between a boggy, crappy running pos and a crisp reving/pulling bike.

my cfm box came used with a spectre filter, i replaced it immedietly with a uni, i'm not a fan of the k&n style filters, i then try'd to use it in my lil buddies 300ex's stock box, and banged it up a little trying to force it in there, but should still work, it also had some silicon cut and placed in it to reduce it to the 2 1/2" inlet of my box, so you'll either have to get a smaller diameter opening, if they make one, or really reduce it down to fit the carb, which is only 2 1/4" o.d.
the best way to do this is use a velocity tube, it straightens the air flow for better results and easier tuning, that will also allow you to reduse it with a fernco fitting or one from here...........

this spectre i have could be yours for free if ya wanna pay the shipping, i have no use for it, it looks as though it's never even been oiled, which i would suggest doing,
and slightly bent up, but should get ya through the winter till you get a box, i saw them down autozone for $29, so it could save ya a few bucks

it's also possibe to just get the proper size uni from ebay that'll fit the back of your carb....2 1/4 inch

thanks for the offer but i can get a filter here for 20 bucks. i managed to make an exhaust from the manifolds back on my f150 so im sure i can manage to reduce it a tad. thanks for the input

I agree totally they cost a ton to begin with and perform marginally better than a foam filter if at all, and they are a pain in the a$$ to clean and service and take forever to dry. the uni filters are awesome to maintain..
1. pull filter off
2.separate layers and cage
3.dish soap and hot water
4.lather& gently wring
5.repeat 3&4 till dirt and oil deposits are gone
6. put in laundry dryer with low to medium heat till dry
7.oil
8. reinstall
this all together is about half an hour from start to finish, k&n style filters cant be wrung out or dried so there are no short cuts so the process will take over 24hrs angers me X(

i think i got my uni for $15 on ebay, and it would be tons "lighter"
those spectre's are very heavy and gonna require a support at the back, or it's gonna come off while riding, mine even came off inside my box when i ran it once while my uni was drying from a cleaning

plus do a google search..........."k&n versus uni" you'll find lots of info, such as sand in the intake when using k&n's, uni's filter more dirt
i'd hate to see you waste that new flotek motor
