calling all computer geeks

sooo crazy thing happened to me last night.... the same thing that happened to kgibbson happened to me...all icons are now gone, and all the program folders claim to be empty,,,my antivirus program did indicate that malware was detected and it all went to crap before i could quarantine it..it now also indicates non stop a hard drive faliure and that it has ran out of RAM and is missing blah blah blah... the OS is windows 7 starter, i have no restore disk since it does not have a disk drive since it is a netbook,,,thank god my main computer is still opporating fine. its really strange i never got the blue screen of death when i tried rebooting...safemode is unuseable as well..kronik or someone stear me in the right direction, thanx.. must caught the elusive forum bug i always hear about on here

i have been running avira's free antivirus for years with no issues, with that and smart browsing ive been virus free till now.. i guess thats what i get for being cheap...

TIME TO INSTALL LINUX OS haha

Honestly, if you are willing to install a linux distro, do it. I have had openSUSE 11.3 on my laptop for about a year now with 0 issues.

openSUSE.org

Also, Windows 7 has a feature to create a repair disk for free...
Create a system repair disc

weird, my computer did the same thing and i did system restore. all i gained was my icons but i lost ALL of my pics, songs, etc. it likes to delete stuff by itself sometimes. i am on it right now though and it runs fine but i keep losing stuff. any suggestions?

back up ur system. i have an external hardrive that i run to both my computers on... you can also set restore points which act like book marks and only restore to the point you created

i honestyly think this is a hard drive crash problem. This same thing happened to our desktop with windows 7. Slowly did this untl it would no longer boot up even. Hard drive would fail to boot, and checked out or hard drive and it is compeletly fried...

i havent done anything...her birthday is coming up and thinking it may be time for this antique to go bye bye (hard drive is getting noisey)....How hard is it to switch programs over without a disk..can i just put them on a flash?

Yeah, you could do that. An 8gb flash drive is all but $15 now adays. You could also burn DVDs with things on it. Each DVD holds 4.7gb (single layer)

Thanks...i'll let ya know what I do...if it was my computer it woulda been fixed along time ago lol

If the hard drive is making noises, it is a good possibility that has went down hill. From my experiences, any clicking or rattling noises in HDs is not good at all. If it hasn't died completely, get all of your stuff backed up. My brother's laptop starting making faint clicking sounds, didn't think anything of it, next day it wouldn't start and he lost everything. Popped a new hard drive in, worked like new.

I have had the same exact problems with my computer. The only way to fix the error screen permenantly is to completely wipe out the computer. As for the blank screen when you boot up, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. Click run and type in explorer.exe.
