Hey, How much and how hard would it be to improve the brakes on a 98 blaster??? Im buying a 98 blaster and all I hear about the 2002 and older bikes is that the brakes SUCK....any input?
Well you can take some time to take apart the caliper, clean it and what not, and get a shorty brake cable or you can get some hydraulic brakes. If you want to convert to hydraulics from another bike, ie. 400ex, street bike, dirtbike, you will need to make a bracket to mount up to your existing carrier, or you can buy a 03-06 carrier from a blaster, buy the complete rear brakes (hydraulic) and then just bolt them up. You will need to weld a tap to your frame to hold the master cylinder though. OR you can just buy this complete ready to bolt up kit.
...or the cheapest way (the way i did it and so have alot of other people) just do what Blasterboy said and take it apart, clean it out real good and buy some new brake pads and the shorty cable (it eliminates the parking brake)...before you put the new pads in and close the caliper, grease up the mechanical parts and it will work like a charm.
Yup. People can lock up the cable brakes up just as good as hydraulic ones, when there tuned right. Just take some time, clean them REALLY good, ditch the old cable, buy a shorty one and should work.
I bought the kit on ebay. Bolted right up and looks good, but I'm not sure how the lines are going to hold up. I'm parting out a raptor 350 now and have a set of hydraulic rears. Wish I would have waited and just used the raptor brakes with a custom mount. Selling the raptor brakes if anyone is interested. xfxgamer@comcast.net
