Blaster Idle Problems

I hope you are not thinking a carb cleaning is all you need to take care of your problems. Preforming a leak down test will be a huge help in being sure you are not sucking in unwanted air that will cause a meltdown of your piston. High and erratic idling is a good sign of an air leak. Contact Slickerthanyou by PM and he will let you rent one for the cost of shipping, since you are so close to him in PA it will be very cheap. Jetting and tunig your carb with an air leak will be impossible. For a few dollars to have the peace of mind that your motor is air tight and save from having to replace your topend, priceless.

absolutely, i would not run that until you get at least a 270/280 + main jet in it
 
I'm gonna go tomorrow and get a set of jets, the carb is all cleaned out now. This thing has been run like this for about 2 years if not longer, what type of damage are we talking about with it running on the stock jetting for that long? I just bought it 5 days ago, and want to get it running properly.
 
Also, I'm on FMF's website right now, and they recommend a 260 main jet with the fmf powercore2 on a blaster. Should I listen to them? I would guess that's correct, coming from the manufacturers website.
 
Owning a 2 stroke means you need to buy some new tools to keep your bike running well.
Go to Harbor Freight tools and buy a compression tester , I have one from them and it was 10 bucks on sale . You should do a compression test and see where it's at .
Anything below 95 psi means you will need a top end rebuild in the near future .
Normal pressure is 120+ and tops out at 145 maybe 150 . Too much compression could mean your piston is too tight in the bore and could cause damage .
Search the forum for information regarding doing a leak down test . And finally Plug chops.
These 3 tests are critical to a 2 strokes longevity , and should be done at least once a year and record the data you collect so you can compare it from year to year .
Regularly clean the air filter and check the chassis for loose nuts and bolts .
 
I did a compression test, and it maxed out at 125. I am trying to talk to someone to get a leak down tester, and I have a new air filter ready to install once I get this jetting situation right. Thanks for all of the help. I'm going tomorrow to get the jets. I'll let you know how it goes after that. One last thing, the FMF site says to get the main jet at 260 and the pilot 32.5 and the needle position 3rd. Does this all sound accurate? It's coming straight from FMF's website, for my 2001 blaster. Should I go with these specs?
 
stock 32.5 pilot, airscrew at 1.5 turns out, stock needle on the middle clip setting, and i'd get 270/280/290 mains, start with the biggest and work down doing plug chops
my local dealer allows me to return/exchange jets if they are wrong
elevation plays a big role in what main jet it takes, my buddy is running a 300 main with an fmf sst pipe and silencer, thats what we threw in to start, and it rips, so we left it alone, the carb is spotless, floats dead on, and it has passed 2 seperate leakdown tests
nobody can tell you exactly what jet to run, so it's best to start big, and work down doing plug chops to confirm each jet, so grab about 4-6 plugs while you get jets tomorrow

My ghast is flabbered that a motor that has been run extremly lean for two years has such good compression.

You are one lucky chappie.

It may pay to take the pipe off and get a look up the exhaust port to see wether the piston and rings are in good order.

If there are any scores or scuffs on the piston it could be advisable to do a top end refurbishment.

And I will take off the exhaust and check the piston just to make sure. I'm not sure, but it kinda sounds like a rattling noise on the top end of the motor. Maybe this is normal for a blaster engine? It's not a ticking, just a rattling noise. Any advise on that?

Keep the stock pilot.

The Blaster is a notouriously noisy engine.

Yeah, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the engine, she runs strong... just kinda noisy, but i guess that's normal for blasters LOL... anyway thanks guys... and Bob... any help would be appreciated, but I dont expect you to drive out of your way 45 minutes to help someone you dont know lol
 
Well I rejetted, and put everything back together, cleaned the carb, cleaned air filter, took the exhaust off and looked down at the piston (no scratches,grooves, or cracks) and took it for a ride, and it's still bogging down real bad.
