no, 14/40 is a good choice for trail and mx riding. with the 14 tooth front sprocket is makes it so you can actually use 1st gear. with a 12 tooth front first gear wouldn't really be used cause it would be to low
Dont go with a 12 in the front. You will have NO 1st gear and second is almost useless. All your doing is shifting because the motor winds out so fast. When I was in 6th, I kept trying to shift again. Hope this helps
One tooth on the front sprocket is, I think, the equivalent of about 3 teeth on the rear. You add/subtract teeth from the rear to fine-tune the gearing.
More teeth = higher top end if you have the power to get there.
Less teeth = faster acceleration but you burn through the gears quicker.
ide go 14/40 im at stock 13/40 and i ride trails and its still just revving out the first 2 gears i hate it. i rip up in 2nd gear and it just revs out and i have to shift its garbage.
