when nitro goes bad

this happened a couple races ago. i didnt see it, but just found the vid browsing youtube. rider was ok and is back racing, setting track records. he recently went 4.7 at over 140 mph on our track. 500' dirt. this was a former pro asphault drag bike. :o

Looks like a supercharger backfire. They blow in funny/top fuel all the time. Just one tiny little hiccup from the engine and that manifold is a powderkeg of rich fuel and high pressure air!
 
thats all it takes, what a volitile fuel!

most of the time they blow because a valve train component fails. Most often then not, a valve spring snaps and leaves an intake valve open. As soon as that cylinder fires, it's a bomb waiting to go off in the intake manifold and because it's supercharged, it can't just blow back out of the intake and shut the engine down...... it blows the mounting bolts apart and the whole thing goes boom!

oh yeah, i just saw a pic on FB of nitro tearing sh*t up as well. parts flying everywhere! pretty cool mike!
