weird noise, rings catching exhaust port..

All are good possibilities however my first guess is also the clutch basket is making the noise.A stock basket uses rivets to keep the gear and basket meshed together, there is actually a small gasket and cushions inbetween those rivets and basket. They have slight movement in that spot on all stock baskets.I would say take the basket off and see if it still does it??If it does than it wouldn't be the first counter balancer/bearing that I have seen blow out.Now get to wrenching cause you know we all want to know the answer to the noober mystery.lol

I would replace the balance gear as "The Godfather "stated after you make sure the retaining nut is tight. You're hearing it in that one spot because that's where force on the balancer changes. At any rate, this is good news and a minor problem. Good that you found it so soon.

that gear getting loose (rivets) is common, when I was racing I would replace it once or twice a season as cheap insurance

cool man, thanks a bunch for wataching the vid and helping me out.

awesome!! i am very happy to hear that! so i assume changing the gear is nothing more than pulling the clutch basket removing the old one and putting a new one in its place? BIG THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE CHIMED IN ON THIS, I LOVE IT HERE I:I I:I I:I I:I

There was a for sale thread a minute ago where the guy was trying to sell a WHOLE lot of stuff (rechambered head and clutch covers) and one of the things in the pile was a balancer shaft gear with the rivets welded solid. hmmmm... something to think about. Probably EVENTUALLY take out the keyway from shock but shouldn't make any noise for a very long time.

now thats interesting, how do you feel about the welded gear? anybody else care to share thier thoughts on that?

seems to me the weld would have to be exactly even, or it'll be outta balance ???
or not that crucial????
either way, you musta got "thelma" on the case to help you find the "ghost", bahaaha

on another note, i found my compression to be down after the "dusty ass" busco ride, but didnt find near the grit/sand i saw insinde a few other carbs while there
(you know who you are, with them dirt sucking k&n filters)
my well oiled uni and outerwears, were clogged with very fine dust after i got home, hence the hard starting saturday, but ken seems to think some still made it thru and caused some ring wear, it has held 152psi for like 3 months, then within 2 weeks dropped some, but weekly compression tests caught it in time
a light hone and new rings coming shortly
anyone else keep track of their compression before and after busco ?????

noobs i'd throw new rings in anyway, since it's already apart
