Hey guys,
Well I want to start off by saying what an awesome site this is! I have read over many of the posts and there are tons and tons of awesome information. I also noticed that there isn't much bashing which is hard to come by these days on a forum. Its good to see that even a noob like myself can have his question answered in a direct and respectful way. I:I
That being said, I recently traded my kx65 for an 03 blaster! YAAAAY!!! I rode my friends this weekend and absolutely fell in love lol. So now that I have my own, I was wondering what I should look for first as far as how well it was maintained, services, etc. I know there are ALOT of how-to's and great info, I was just curious if anyone had a possible checklist of anything and everything I should check before hitting the trails. It is all stock minus the nerf bars and the previous owner deleted the oil injection system. Also it seems to run good without any major noticeable issues. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I'm mechanically inclined but this will be my first quad so I thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks guys. Good to be here. You'll be seeing me a lot! Pics soon!

ok if the bike is stock, intake and exhaust wise your jetting should be fine. my first step would be to buy a compression tester, and a leakdown tester. slickerthanyou sells them here for a very reasonable price. you can get a compression tester for about 25bux. your compression should be about 120 or better on a stock blaster. kick the motor over with the throttle wide open until the guage stops going up to read the compression. the leakdown tester will come with very good instructions. this will give you a good idea of where your motor is at now and if it will need any work in the near future

Well a basic look of what to check out first.

is, new crankcase oil. can't go wrong with fresh oil.

Make sur ethe air filter is clean and re-oil it.

Lube all the cables up and make sure the brakes work well.

make sure the chain is not all stretched out and is nto to loose, clean and oil it.

But many on here, feel, the #1 thing to do, is a leak down test. air leaks, are the #1 issue with failed blaster's.

A air leak, causes improper ratio of oil and air flow. and you can run lean and hot, due to this, causing a engine failure.

The guy who does my engine work, says its the #1 one thing, he has seen from all the engine work he has done on the blaster motors.

Recommends replaces of the seals every 5 to 6 years.

Know that if you plan on running it in the winter, you will need to change the jetting on the carb !

It also never hurts to check all the electrcal grounds and connections and make sure they are clean and free of corrison and dirt.

A new spark plug does not hurt a bit either.

Other than that and then perhaps clean the carb.

Thats the basics, that I would start off with.

Awesome info thank you very much. I could take it to my local motorsports shop but I'd much prefer to do everything myself and this gives me a good place to start. Air filter is filthy, chain has way too much slack and is bone-dry, also noticed the rubber boots on the carb seem to be a little dry-rotted. I have an automotive leak-down and compression tester, would they be compatible? No worries on the winter aspect as I live in south florida. Coldest it gets here is 60 lol. I'm sure discussing what fluids to use is like arguing about religion or politics but based on what you've experienced, what's the best oil to run in the crankcase and for premix? I could do a search but since you two are the first to respond and seem well educated on the subject I'd like to get your opinion. Also, if the leakdown and compression check come out ok, would I have to change anything if I add full exhaust, fmf, procircuit, whatever. Thanks again guys!

Yes, if you added a performance pipe, you would need to change carb, jet and needle settings. and a aftermarket performance air filter, will also.

well im new to the blaster, but own 3 other atv's. I have been picking my relatives brain, who owns a blaster, his son races one.

But some of my replt was common, typical checks.

As for oil, he prefers bellray 80 weight for his crankshaft. as for 2 cycle oil. oem is what he uses.

You can use any brand or blend of 2 cycle engine oil designed for use in AIR COOLED 2 stroke engines. Do not use marine-grade "outboard" oil. It cannot wistand the high operating temps of a Blaster engine and will break down. Yamalube, Maxima, Bel-Ray, Amsoil, Klotz, Redline, and many others all make oils suitable for use in a Blaster engine. Look on the bottle. As long as the oil meets JASO FC or FD standards, you'll be good to go.

I personally run Amsoil Dominator oil. Choose your own.

And yes, you will have to re-jet your carburetor (main jet only) whenever you alter the amount of air entering (aftermarket air filter, airbox lid removal, etc) the engine, or leaving (aftermarket pipe) the engine.

Welcome to the forum. Alot of people use automatic transmission fluid in the clutch and gearbox when you change it run your bike for a little to warm up the fluid, let it drain for a half hour replace plug and add 650 ml of fresh fluid. Enjoy your new ride.
