so i finally got the red n black beast running after new upgrades and its got hella power but the top end is super noisey, it taps or pings really loud. from talking with buddies and reading my clymer manual im thinking i need to either move to a colder plug or higher octane gas. as of now i've been running on 97 oct pump gas.

mods are too much to list but heres a partial list

big bore kit
flotek port job
3mm stroker crank
timing advanced 4deg
vf3 reeds
34mm carb
k&n filter no lid
gold series fatty pipe

bring the timing back down a couple degrees and see if it goes away. i'd run 110 in it or mix the 97 and 110

its the 4deg key so its 4deg or no degrees. when i was discussing with with my buddies we were torn down the middle between needing a colder plug or higher octane. i was told to get vp 112oct if i needed higher octane and mix it 50/50 with 97oct pump gas.

did flotek port it to use pump gas or race gas?is ur head milled?if so u might need to run the spacer plate.timiing should be fine i running 5* adv and i got no noises but ur altitude it higher so that might make a difference

The problem could be from the fuel detonating before top dead center due to the pressure. Retarding the timing should fix it. You could also try higher octance gas like Brandonz28 stated.

just went through the same problem you are having. mine was happening at the top of the rev making a pinging noise tried everything. and it finally ended up being the timing. i had it advanced 4 deg. i tuned it back to stock and the pinging is gone i am also running 93 octane.. this was a bare to figure out....

anyone else have suggestions? i'd hate to buy 5gal of vp and then not need or be able to use it

Just buy one galloon and mix it with a galloon of 97. You won't have a problem using gas. If that fixes it you should also try taking off the 4º timing key and check if that fixes the ping. Because race gas is expensive.

Definitely try retarding the timing that could be the problem
Not that it means anything but I think this is one of the reasons why angus told me not to advance the timing.

i dont mind buying race gas if it fixes the problem and adds power. my only problem is i've only seed 5gal and 50gal quanities for sale havent seen anywhere selling by the gallon here. if i'd loose power buy retarding the timeing and gain power buy leaving the timing and raising the octane i have no problem buying race gas. i dont want to sacrifice power tho. i've got other machines to ride so its not going to cost me a fortune to ride this once in a while with race gas.

i wonder if adding the octane booster stuff from the gas station would raise the octane enough to see if thats the problem before spending $60 for the vp

i tried that stuff once and it ran like dump.. lol i would try backing off the timing advance. i just backed mine off because of the same thing your getting and i didnt notice any loss in power.

If you want to run octane booster, get the NOS stuff from Checker/Autozone. Its the stuff thats like 12 bucks a can.

One can of that stuff will treat my MR2 Turbos fuel tank and bump my octane from 91 to 93.4 so you dont need a whole lot of it. I would run a quarter can of it to a full tank of gas tops.

timing advance key was taken out, replaced with stock key and the problem was fixed but my pipe had a gap in between it and the cyl and the gasket was missing. today i replaced the ring gasket between the pipe and cyl and tightened it down and added hd clutch springs and now the ping is back. it sounds like the rings catching on something or some other metalic tapping. could it be possible that this top end isnt set up for a 3mm crank like the guy i bought it from said it was (i doubt this is the case) and my piston is hitting the head because of not running the spacer plate that comes with the crank?
