today i was riding to a spot to meet my other friends so i could ride. i was crusing in 3rd gear and down shifted to second then first to slow down instead of using the brakes. and then it started popping and then it cut off. so i thought it was out of gas and turned it to reserve. but now it sounds like crap and accelerates like crap.

does this sound like i could use a rebuild? or is this worse?

jsut my personal preferance but i dont like to down shift to slow down on such a small engine, i worked my ass converting these brakes to hydro im using them!!!! haha what are everyone else's thoughts on downshifting to slow down?

y not? I know with it being a small motor it does take time to slow you down, especially with my fat ass, but then again I don't have much in the way of brakes atm cause I can't afford them.

As far as the OP I would recommend a new plug as well, sounds like what happen to me and I was fearing the worse, changed the plug and it runs like a beast again.

i'm not so much worried about it being a small engine as i hear that engine braking is bad for the motor with a 2 stroke

engine braking is particular demanding on a 2 stroke. All of the bottom end lube is coming in through the gas. While the engine is running at full tilt, enough oil is coming in and dropping out of the fuel suspension to keep the bottom end bearings happy. When you are turning the engine over but not applying throttle, you aren't putting any lube in but the bottom end is still turning over fairly fast (and consuming that oil). Too much consumption without any replenishment means bad bad things.

awk sells a hydro back brake set up he uses gsxr brakse they work great they lock up and stay locked up til u let go and as for the engine braking the onlytime i did that is when i i hadcable brakes and they stroped working and for ur problem like everyone els said try a new plug mine lost alot of power b4 changed the plug ran like new

let us know how this works out for you... i have had a similar problem.. have not fixed it yet lol

Engine braking on a 2 smoke?
Bad idea.
You should either get a 4 stroke or use your brakes.

Well, it's ok for emergency and for short periods. The engine is running an excess of lube in the bottom end the whole time it's running so there's some there for when you do a short burst of deceleration and downshift. But repeated downshifts slowing from top speed to a dead stop without touching the throttle is a bad idea and can shorten the life of your engine. With a 2 smoker all it takes is one little scratch on a piston one time and the next time it runs real hot on a long acceleration it can come apart. If you do need to downshift, pull the clutch in real quick and tap the thottle halfway through your downshifting. Something to throw a little oil in there while it's turning.

The best idea by far is to keep the brakes in good working order and just use those...haha!

i think the only time you would have an oil starvation issue is when coming off a wide open run, which isnt good for these engines, and its suggested to "blip" the throttle during the deceleration, to feed it some fuel/oil,
but i've been downshifting these things in the trails for years with no troubles
there should be about an 1/8" of oil laying down in the cases at all times just waiting for enuf turbulance to pick it up for use

it doesnt matter which plug, although i prefer the b8es, the "r" is for "resistor", which is to reduce radio interference, so unless you're listening to the radio while riding, or give a sh*t about the 86 year old neighbor dude getting static while listening to his ball game, then just use the b8es as stated
