Check the depth and quality of the machining where the clip fits.
In my early days I worked in quality control in a factory that produced pistons.
Being only a small tipped tool that machines the groove, it is prone to breaking.
If the tip breaks off, then the problem can be easily picked up, but if it only chips, the result will be a groove which is not deep enough, whick looks good to the inspector, who in my day only did an eye inspection.
In no way am I bagging Wiesco, but I can fully understand how an imperfect piston can slip by the inspector.
You may have picked up one of the few pistons that fooled quality control.
