Spark Arrester

Im gonna take my bike to some dunes next weekend and my buddy keeps telling me that they are requiring spark arresters and enforcing it (which i find hard to believe). He went out and bought a 75 dollar arrester. Is there any shortcut or any way you can cobble up some kind of home made one. Open to any suggestions. Thanks

some area are required to have them, i dont think there is anyway to make one,because they have to be certified or something, what type of exhaust do you have?

Its just a stock exhaust nothing speicial. I just find it hard to believe that someone is going to stop every quad, bike and truck that try to get on the dunes to make sure they have a certified spark arrester.

If your running your stock silencer, theres a spark arrester built into it from the factory.

they will stop u and check evvveerrryyy single machine....my dad had to buy a $75 sparky for my step bros fmf power core 2 cause they wouldnt let him in

What dunes are you heading to? Yes they will stop EVERY machine as they go in and check. If you do not have a stock pipe, or one labeled with a spark arrestor lable they will generally shine a flashilight in there to check and if they do not see one they will stick a rod on your exhaust tocheck for one.. We found out the hard way that 2 of our machines I assumed had Spark arrestors did not have them.. Like REEDracing94 said we found out the expensive way..

I have an FMF pipe on the quad I recently purchased but the stickers on the silencer were removed so I am not real sure which one it is. Is there a way to figure out what model it is? Also should I assume the way to see if it has a spark arrester is to look in it with a flash light. I currently have it off the bike so it's easy to do.

You can go to the mfg web site and it will tell you which pipes have one and which ones dont. I sold my Pro Circuit silencer on ebay because it did not have one but kept the pipe to use with the stock one because it does. Seems like a lot of people on here dont ust spark arrestors. They need to be U.S Forestry approved. I know a guy that made a silencer for his 4wd and was riding it on the ice and a DNR nailed him....

You can stick a rod (gently) in your tail pipe to see if there is one there... Our local DNR officer at the dunes carries one to check if you do not have a stamped label on your pipe.

there's really no reason to remove a spark arrestor if yo have one. the difference in the flow characteristics are minimal and I doubt the seat of the pants test would produce any results.

I was just expressing my opinion that I think that it's ridiculous to require them. The USFS is a ridiculous organization......don't get me started on those idiots.

Take a flame thrower, roam around the dunes aimlessly trying to start sh*t on fire. Good luck.

I agree, spark arrestors are not necessary at all for sand. however, i ride trails alot and dont have one and i probably should.

Yeah i don't have one, and i've never been checked for it, i turn heads pretty quick when they hear the straight pipe(they think there's somethin in the silencer, lol) come tearin up the road

the spark arrester is nothign more than a wire mesh screen inside the endcap of the silencer. if you have a stock pipe, there are 3 screws on the back of it. take them off and remove the endcap and you will easily see the screen on its inside.

actually, the dunes are the worst place to not have it. its a very dry climate and 2-strokes especially can create fires very easily if the conditions are right. i can promise you that there are people MUCH smarter than anyone on this site who have determined the need for it. will lack of a spark arrester cause a fire? probably not, but its better to be safe than sorry. i can see that most of you who say they are bullshit have actually been to the desert and actually seen how much dry vegetation there actually is here that could fuel a quite large wildfire if given the oppurtunity. hell, southern california is on fire all the time because of people that think the same way.
