Just how necessary do you think those little pieces of rubber on the head and jug are? Has anyone actually had a problem with them being missing?
Rubber engine vibe dampners

I've heard that not running them will cause the fins to crack because of the vibration. Thats what I've heard but can't confirm it
over time that could happen. The dampners are there to keep the fins from hitting each other, which also keeps them from flexing. Over time, the flexing will cause the metal to crack due to fatigue.
I run them on the cylinder but not on the head due to modifications. I think the purpose is to decrease noise and they defiantly add support to the fins. I have one without the dampeners and have not broken any fins.
my sons motor(ken oconnor bored and casting flaws cleaned), thats in my bike for break-in till i finish his rebuild, didnt come with any of the rubbers, and i can hear the difference, it's kinda like a tuning fork sound, i thought something was wrong at first, but when i grab and squeeze the fins hard i can hear it less
Yeah, ok. Sounds like one of those "can't hurt" kinda things. I didn't really want to take them off, but a couple had fallen out since my last rebuild. Thanks, guys.
Does placement count? I have the head removed and am currently porting with the video series that Mr. OConnor was kind enough to post. This is going to be the best d.i.y ever. I think when I'm done, I'll put them all on one side to see whether it cracks only one side. Or, maybe the axle bearings will dissolve into some vitreous viscoelastic liquid....Ahhh, the possiblilties.
