so me and my friend were riding blasters yesterday, and he was on my brothers which has a pretty worn clutch were talking like non-existent almost

and me friend was trying to convince me that it gets worn out from shifting without the clutch,

so i dont think thats true i think its worn from use

Shifting without the clutch will definatly not wear out a clutch, how on earth can you wear something out, if you do not use it!

You tell your friend that he is a Bull Artist, you can tell him I said so.

It either is worn from use, needs adjusting, or has the wrong oil in the tranny.

But shifting without the use of the clutch often can be bad for your bike right?

If you have the experience and know how, shifting without the clutch is fine.

I very seldom use the clutch.

I use the clutch when I am in heavy going, or need to slip it for traction control.

Unless you are very familiar with the bike and know the rev changes between gears, I do not recommend that you try.

i dont im a fan of the clutch the way i see it is they put it there for a reason an ive always used it im gonna contiue to...
but i have gotten into many arguments with my freind he thinks hes a expert on everything with a motor but both his bikes are blown up an everytime he works on his car its worse then before he started he recently went to "fix a rod knock" an install knew bearing now the car wont fire....

BUt thats besides the point he think that the clutch shouldnt be used besides taken off on any bike for any reason... he literally yells at me becuase i use my clutch...

What damge does it cause if you shift wrong without a clutch?

just curious what happens, if you do it wrong?

If you do it wrong its wear and broken gears.Never force it into another gear.

When riding conditions favour, and you know what you are doing, gear changing without a clutch is easy.

It is a matter of knowing at what time to change and where to have the throttle, I guess I may have an advantage here cos I use a twister.

But get it wrong, especially when changing down to a lower gear, you put extreme forces on the gear components, and you are more than likely to break something.

It is not just a matter of stabbing it into gear, it is more a case of feeling where the gears are.

For those who wish to learn shifting without the clutch, may I say, try it by shifting up through 4,5,6 as forces on the components are lesser.

Do not even dream of downshifting, until you have mastered shifting up through the lower gears, as downshifting is a whole different kettle of fish.

It is an aquired art, and not everyone can master it, if you continually crunch gears or have to put more than a little pressure on the gear lever, stop trying and use the clutch.

^^^this is a man who Knows!!! I been riding for 30+ years. It's not something you DO, more like something you FEEL. I agree with Blaaster.

I am upping it here, I have been at it for 50+ years, and at times I still stuff up a change.:D

There are conditions which demand that you use a clutch, especially heavy going and hills.

Clutches are cheaper and easier to fix...use the clutch if you are unsure.

Whether or not it does damage or not is debatable and depends on how well you know your machine and how well you can ride it.If you know your machine then no it isnt an issue.Look at how an air shifter works besides momentarily killing the ignition so the rpms fall as they should allowing the gears to kinda "FALL" into place since its shifted with no clutch.

On a car/truck ive seen them wear throw out bearings prematurely because people dont get that theyre not driving 18 wheelers.Ive also seen synchros worn premature due to this and of course stripped/chipped teeth on gear sets.

ok thanks guys and i figured i was right cause your not using it.

and i dont use the clutch much, i thinks its partially because my truck is manual also, and i can shift that without a clutch but i use it anyway

yeah i defintally dont try it ever i use my clutch if the clutch weears its like 40 buck max on ebay

IF the gears wear idk where to start even
