Pro circuit needs repacking?

i should have tried the pink panther brand then, the yellow stuff melted...i swear, LOL

Oh, I don't know anything about the yellow stuff. I know allot of people have used residential insulation in powder coating ovens as an alternative to more expensive "rock wool" and ceramic. Opinion is that the fiber glass insulation only has a life span of a few hundred hours at powder coating curing temps. BTW, the Borla stuff I use is specifically made for exhaust system, not scrubbing pots and pans, it's almost impossible to pull apart.
To the OP, about any shop will have silencer packing for $10 or less a pack (the last I bought was $7.95 at the indie shop where I bought it). What is the purpose for not using actual silence packing? I was just comparing one thing to the other and like the SS sound better and that it isn't likely to absorb unburnt oil like I've seen fiber glass do.

like i said, i only tried the yellow insulation just to test if it would work, while real packing was in the mail
it sure looks alot more like regular silencer packing than steel wool, and won't chew up a cylinder if indeed it can be sucked back in ?

I did not Shred or Rip my Steel wool , I only pushed it in and put it together ! , I also used compressed air to blow through each Side before Installation !

What I used is designed for high end exhaust systems, though 4 stroke exhaust systems, which doesn't such anything back into the head. I never gave any consideration to any of it getting pulled all the way back to the cylinder, but I guess it's theoretically possible. But as tough as the stuff I used was, if any of it does get back into the cylinder you can bet it's going to do some damage.

Regular steel wool rusts very fast, especially the fine stuff.
Try it. Wet it, shake it dry and let it sit out overnight.

And is also flammable.....ever put a piece across a 9 volt battery?

Here's the stuff.

If steel wool worked better, it would come in the Pro-Circuit pipe and every pro would be running it. Packing should be changed at least once a year. A two stroke is a scavenging engine. The last bit of the exhaust / fuel charge is stuffed back into the cylinder just before the piston closes the exhaust port. You don't want to risk little pieces of steel wool getting into your cylinder. Not a good place to reinvent the wheel.

I am not defending steel wool by any means. the argument for that is that it is kept covered in oil from the exhuast and doesn't rust. again not defending it bc i run fmf packing but that is what the ones who do use it say

Unfortunatly not a well enough known fact, most people presume that everything goes straight out the pipe, and a leaky pipe is no problem.

Trouble is with a leaky pipe I sucks in fresh air and leans out the fuel charge.

Bit off topic I know, but I have a new soapbox!

The formation of rust would not be my conceren, but I would worry about the vigorious exhaust gas movement breaking off some of the fine steel wool fibres and cause them to migrate back into the pipe
