hey i was wondering what was the best tools for polishing my motor up? i'm doing a rebuild on my motor and i was wondering what grit sandpaper to use? any tips with doing it also???

i just did my clutch cover...turned out pimp...dont have pics but it took a long ass time...

you will need: 80,120,200,400,800,1500 (wet),2500 GRIT paper

1st: use 80 grit paper and scrap off all the black paint on whatever part you wanna shine...this honestly took me about 5 hours...the longer you do this stage the better it comes out...

2nd: use the 120 and do the same thing as the 80...take your time on this as well...about 2 hours...

3rd: continue the process untill you get thru the 800 grit...

4th: when its time for the 1500 use warm soapy water to soak the paper in for a little bit...you dont have to get it wet, but it helps the shine in the end...

5th: finish off with the 2500...

6th: last if you have one, use a dremel and polish it to the dream shine you have always wanted...

this is what i did for the clutch cover so the time will vary from the parts you want...

LOTS of elbow grease, buffing wheels and metal polish after the sanding. Good luck, you will be able to torque flywheel bolts with your fingers when you are done

just started on my clutch cover

going to do the engine cases too

i can tell u that out of the people on this site that polish there is only one that can do motor cases properly as im the only one that has the proper equipment. a bench grinder with polishing wheels isnt gonna cut it

Dam I think thats a lot of work. 80 grid is pretty ruff too. I was thinking of just airplane stripper then maybe 220 then 800 then letting the polishing wheel do the rest. It not going to take me that long to polish but I'm just doing the circle around yamaha.

lol i done the clutch cover 90% by hand, thats sanding the paint off and scrubbing it with steel wool.but like i said im not finished and i will post pics when i am

if your going to polish a piece do not sandblast it as u will never get all the sand blasting pit marks out no matter how much u sand

HAHA too late i should of looked at this post before I did it in that spot. It took about an hour an half to get it smooth..Here was a shot half way into sanding ..

it is going to take you a lot of time (hours) to do it right. it is probably a lot easier and cheaper to spend the $200-300 and have a professional do it rather than buy a lot of specialty tools. but you can do quite a bit with a dremmel and samdpaper it will just take you forever. good luck on your project..

I am not wasting $200 or $300 when it is just going to get scratched up when riding.. Its not a mirror finish but its shinny enough for me , now on to some paint..maybe a little more polishing ..
