Painted my a-arms over the week and they finally dried, problem is, the paint is kinda "soft" if you take your fingernail to it and run it across with a little pressure, it peels the paint right off, wanna know, is there anything I can put over top of it to keep it from doing that? I used Rustoleum Auto-primer, let that dry overnight, spray painted with a rustoleum gloss protective black...

prep and temp bro, i did this 2 years ago, painted my frame during a 60 degree day in the spring, hit it with the last coat of clear, went in to eat and darkness fell as did the temps into the low 40's in a hurry, the clear wasnt drying and had fogged, almost looked white,
i was freakin !!!!!!!!!!!!
quickly thought ...........hit it with the propane torch, moving quickly so i didnt burn it, cleared right up and hardened very well, kinda like a pro paint shop "bakes" a paint job in an oven
worth a shot, you got nuthin to lose at this point
just keep the torch moving

screw that use ur oven just dont let ur wife catch ya lmao

my frame wouldnt fit in the oven, and my bikes are at my garage at my mom's, that is way worse than any wife or GF, mom would'a stabbed me !!!!!

Theres your problem. You should never paint in any temp lower than 60-65*F The paint didnt "stick" and just waiting overnight didnt cure the paint.

try to get the torch at a high wide flame, not the small pointy one needed for soldering, and let her have it, in nice long strokes and keep moving, you'll see the paint get shiny when it gets hot enuf
i'd say one whole arm shouldnt take more than 2-3 minutes to warm up.
i also use the torch trick on my plastics to remove the little fuzzies that us guys get who really ride the thing and get scratches, it also shines the plastics a little too

Or just wait till it is warm out. You can't paint metal that is cold. The metal needs to be above 70f.

prep dy time and temps are your problem...

do not paint when its cold, your wasting time and money, if you can get what your painting into the basement thats your best bet, or wait tell it warm out, when using spray can only wait 5 min between coats, use light coats,

and clean the surface good, free of grease, dust dirt and oil, if your chea usine 98% rubbing alcohol from walmart its like abuck, and wipe it down and let it dry before spraying.

Trust me, I would love to PC, but the 400ex has the non-removable ball joints, so i cant bake them at 450*F..Gonna try what awk did, i think it will work....Also, maybe sitting them inside my house would do a little bit of good as well....

painting while its 30 dgrees out is just stupid its going to look awful and its not going to last long at all just wait til its warm your a arms will look alot better and lost longer

easy.... we all make mistakes

poor prep

I have often (in a pinch) used can spray paint. However, I usually take my cutting torch or propane torch and heat cure it before I lay down another layer. Ive had fairly good results doing so. However, it will never hold to powdercoat or plating.

This requires good ventilation, as flame and paint fumes can explode.

make a mini paint booth and use a space heater to keep the temps up . also hang the parts in the booth for an hour Before Painting , the metal has a chance to warm up .
I've made paint booths from painters plastic and 1x1's . Find a thermometer around the house to hang in there to make sure you are and stay in the proper range . Otherwise , wait till summer .

Was the primer wetsanded any? This would help b4 sprayin bcuz it would flake then....plus wetsanding something that was fully prepped and primerd would make for a slicker sicker paintjob
