I've heard people say the higher the octane the lower engine temperature. Is this correct or not. I run 110 octane leaded fuel called renegrade mixed with bel-ray mc-1. 1 pint to 4.7 gallons of the gas
here ya go..
octane is not a measure of "power" but more ameasure of resistance to knock ro resistance to detonation.. higher octane fuels burn SLOWER not faster.. so when your buddy with the civic and the fart can exhaust tip puts 93 in his all stock civic he's actually making it SLOWER!!! ok lets look at it this way..
just for easy figuring sake lets say that your spark plug fires at 10deg BTCD (before top dead center)
you want the flame front to have built enough cylinder pressure to give you a full "push" on the piston down stroke..
lets say we are shooting for 15deg ATDC (after top dead center) and on pump gas teh flame front is timed to actually hit that 15* ATDC
now when you put say 110 octane fuel it burns sigficantly slower than say 93 octane.. so with the same compression and timing your flame front is ending and you "push" may not come till say 30* ATDC you've now lost 15* of "push" therefore your making LESS power.
higher compression will accelerate cylinder pressure and therefore cylinder temp and will aid in the combustion process and the flame front will burn faster... added ignintion timing will light the mixture sooner so the flame front will end at your desired time. added ignition timing helps in the low-mid same with higher static compression but these things in excess will hurt your topend power.. you've probably heard the saying before.. "good if used in moderation"
you diggin what i'm shovelin???
burning oil
go to the troutdale airport its around 4.00 a gallon
if your blaster resembles an airplane use it. stay away from the airport
i originally switched to it because of a trip i took to the dunes, it was the first time that i tried to go on a fast ride with my friends with banshees, yfz450s, raptors, and a modded trx250r. i was running it hard wide open 3rd gear most of the time (just to be able to see them crest the next dune over from me). anyways my engine was really hot and pinging, which was causing me concern. so, i decided to buy some 110 and see the difference. my rationale for using the 110 was that the blaster gets great mileage and i needed something better to keep my engine alive. i now will not go back to pump gas as i have found that the $8.79 a gallon for the 110 a value for my needs as i have yet to use more than 8-9 gallons of it a weekend. if you google "ethanol free fuel in your area" as i have i have found a couple of places that will pump ethanol free fuel into a gas can. i may try and blend that with the race fuel to see if i can get the same benefits of 100% 110- smoother and cooler running- while saving me a little $$$. if you have an airport in the area you may want to try 100ll as it is cheaper than 110 and should provide the same benefits. i hope that this helps to explain why i made the switch. know i am going to google my area for place to get 100ll avgas- as it is getting harder to find now that it is being phased out of production (from what i have been told) because of the lead content. I also will not have an engine built to run only race gas as i do not want to be required to use 110. ciao!
