Ok so I was just out riding. Riding for like 5 min tops. I bog down and stall. I try startin it baxk up and its backfiring. I take the sp out clean it up and kick it without it to clean it out. Put it back in startd right up, perfext idle. Now, here's the kicker, I kick it into first, IT STARTS f*ckING ROLLING BACKWARDS! Now I know blasters don't have reverse, so wtf happened?! P.s I'm SOMEWHAT new to atvs, but I know I'm not thatttt stupid... you guys always helpme out, don't let me down.. :-/

woodruff key sheered on the stator. pull the stator off, if the timing is off enough then it will run backwards

Another guy here with the same answer. Sheared key! Pull the stator cover, take off the flywheel nut, and remove the flywheel to see what happened. Easy fix most of the time.

im lost how dos a sheared key make the engine start in reverse? :S somethin dosent add up there. and i sheared this key myself before one time and the bike wouldent start at all due to the crank just spinning on the flywheel. so other then bumping your bike in gear backwards how do you kick start it up in reverse? :S

If the flywheel has slipped just a little so it is in extreme advance, when you kick it sometimes it can fire backwards and run (not well though).

No matter which way the crank turns the piston still goes through the inducion/compression/exhaust cycle, add a spark at the correct time and the motor will run.

Re: now this is f**cked up.

Doesn't make sense.

That's the beauty (and mystery) of a two stroke. There are two stroke sleds and golf carts that use reverse engine power stokes for reverse gear. Actually the OP could have had his engine start backwards with absolutely nothing wrong. Under right circumstances if you didn't have enough momentum to carry through compression stroke but enough to spark, wahla, it starts backwards. If stock timing is about 4* BTDC, in oppisite rotation it would be 4* ATDC, still close enough to run, not real well, and not suggested.
If you doubt this, roll backwards down a small hill and pop the cutch= reverse :D

Ahh, the memories of a vintage two stroke "kicking back" :o

Re: now this is f**cked up.

A good way to get some speed in the old days was to advance the timing into excess,

Ahh the memories of a barked ankle from the kicker nearly tearing your foot off.

:D You've got several years on me, therefore a few more ankle "jobs". With the advent of cdi the younger crowd doesn't know the "joys" of advanced "stactic" timing :o. Thought I broke my foot when my 238 Kawi kicked back with just tennis shoes on :o

im with you on this. i know a 2stroke can run in reverse nothen other then timing stopping it for doing so. and ya some of those new skidoos actually shut down and restart in reverse to back up. BUTTT i just dono how he got it started in reverse off the kick start :S kinda odd if he dident bumper backwards. only way i could see is if after the kick the engine gave alittle cough causing it to rotate then start in reverse.one of those very odd and strange things

Re: now this is f**cked up.

Thats what happens the kicker gets to the bottom of its movement just as the spark fires, the kicker comes up and hey presto, 6 reverse gears. :)

In the 60s the Russians had a 2 stroke bike a "Cossack" it was exported as a kit, it was very prone to reversing.

It got that way, I was scared to let the clutch out fast in case it was going the wrong way.

Wot happened I didn't do that!
