Normal pipe temps?

My bud has a Blaster with a few mods, including an FMF pipe. I was curious how hot the pipe normally gets, because the Blaster karts gas tank will only be a few inches away from the pipe.

Anyway, even after beating on his bike up and down the road, you could actually lay your hand on the pipe. It was just warm, but not red hot or anything crazy. Is that normal for a bike in good tune?

wait your thing says blaster kart is it like a go kart with blaster motor attached or actuall blaster frame and motor or what? if go kart i could see that if you set it to one side it would get alot of air to run cooler.

No, I'm building a Blaster powered kart, but my bud just has a regular Blaster. I was making a note of his pipe temps since the gas tank on my cart is within a few inches of the pipe. I wanted to know what kind of heat would be radiating off the pipe on the kart once it is running.

Hmmmm. I wonder how his is so cool then...Now I worry about my fuel tank being too close to the expansion chamber... I guess we shall see.

Id say its cooler because its obviously BIGGER than a 4 poke pipe. More area makes it cool alot faster. Id still bet its pretty freaking hot about 6-10 inches up from the cylinder.

if your worryed about exhaust temps.. your gas tank a few inches from the pipe will be fine,

here are a few options for you..
#1 make a aluminum or sheet metal heat sheild to go between your pipe and tank
#2 go to your local auto zone or advance auto parts or online and get some exhaust header wrap and wrap your expansion chamber with it.. looks decent and works very well.. i know guys that wrap there pipes on there drag bikes to keep from burning there legs, also helps with power since its containing the heat

I've always like heat wrap but some people say its bad for 2strokes. why?

The heat wraps hold in some heat keep it from raidating it will run hotter. Only good if you want to keep the heat from burning you or something. Its bad for the gas temp in the expansion chamber, dont know how but it makes it worse according to another forum. It would be good for cold starting certain things. Supposed to be only a small gain on 4 strokes.

I doubt heat wrap has a huge difference in more or less power I would use it for protecting something. You could also make up some air scoops, I was impressed on how much it cooled my cylinder head after a ride.

Thanks fot the info guys. :) I will have to make some scoops before its over because the engine sits behind the seat and probably wont get enough air flow across it without some assistance.

In a 4 stroke its always pushing the hot air out....by wrapping the exhaust it keeps the heat in helping to scavenge it out of the cylinder. The 2 stroke actually pulls some of the exhaust back into the chamber to burn. So you want it cooler. Cooler air is denser and makes more power then hot air. Thats why you see people using cowl induction or ram air on there muscle cars. Bottom diagram shows how 2 stroke pulls fuel charge from exhaust http://www.vf750fd.com/blurbs/stroke.html

just put some of that head reistant stuff they use to protect everything around the exhaust on cars and atvs. i remeber my dads atv has the exhaust right beside the plastic comparetment in the rear and it has that stuff on it. find some of that. what materials your tank?
